Can The 2020 Corvette Stingray Take Down The Porsche 911 Carrera S?

The first reviews of the 2020 Corvette Stingray came out yesterday and now, the first review comparing the new ‘Vette to the latest Porsche 911 Carrera S has been published thanks to Motor Trend.

Both the new Corvette Stingray and 911 Carrera S line-up very nicely on paper. They are similar in size (the C8 is a few inches larger) and have similar weight distributions with 61 per cent of the Corvette’s weight in 3LT form sitting over the rear wheels compared to the 64 per cent of the 911.

In terms of power, the Chevy has 495 HP and 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) compared to the Porsche’s 443 HP and 390 lb-ft (528 Nm). In a straight-line, the Corvette had a slight edge during testing, accelerating to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 2.8 seconds compared to the 911’s 2.9 seconds and doing the quarter-mile in 11.1 seconds at 123.2 mph (198.2 km/h), beating the Porsche’s 11.2-second time, although the latter achieved a higher speed at 124.3 mph (200 km/h).

Then we come to cornering. During skidpad testing, the Corvette recorded an average of 1.04 lateral g while the 911 recorded a superior 1.09 g. These results translated into Motor Trend’s figure-eight lap where the Porsche set a time of 22.7-seconds at 0.94 average lateral g to the Corvette’s 23.3-second lap at 0.90 g. The Corvette doesn’t perform all that well because of the understeer it experiences. This, according to the publication, has likely been intentionally engineered into the car to make it safer, as most owners would have never driven a mid-engined car before.

In the end, the publication concluded that the Porsche is the better sports car, but the Corvette is the better overall package.

Results are as one would expect them to be. The Porsche is the better performer and has better fit and finish but the Corvette is the better bang for the buck. The differences aren’t enough to justify paying a $40,000 premium, however, I would want the Porsche simply because I like the 911, plain and simple. It’s in my blood.

Regarding the fit and finish, what I got from the MT article was that the fit and finish were not that much different. The base 911S was kinda of meh.

I can’t wait to see what the grand sport or the z06 will do especially since these are the true comparable in terms of price category . As is, the Z51 gets to 60 faster than a 2017 Porsche turbo. While that does really mean much in terms of true performance it kinda puts this entry level corvette into perspective as being a capable sports car that is unbeatable in terms of price. Comparing to other sub- $80k sports cars the Vette is brilliant.

Which would I chose if money wasn’t an issue.. probably the 911 as well— or both:)

I believe that father time tells a different story. I had an Acura TL and Honda S2000 and now own a 2012 Audi A7 and a 2006 Porsche 911 4S. The interiors of my German vehicles STILL both look basically new, and my Honda’s looked old after 5 years. Same for my neighbor’s C6 Vette. His interior isn’t aging well either. The leather and plastic paint are wearing horribly. A 10 year old Vette usually looks like a 10 year old Vette.

So the Porsche is the better sports car as a result of intentionally tuned understeer? The understeer was intentional for safety purposes? Come on! So are they saying the Corvette is safer than the Porsche? If a person can’t safely pilot any given sports car, then that car isn’t for you. Some cars understeer, while others oversteer. Depending on your driving style, you choose the car that suits you. Porsches in the 70’s and even 80’s were death traps because of their aggressive oversteering nature. People still bought them… and lived. Now, Porsches can be driven at high rates of speed by virtually anyone with decent driving skills. Porsche did their homework and exorcised the demons out of their cars. Why couldn’t GM do the same with the Vette? Hmmm?

    No brainer, the Porsche

    And Chevy dealerships don’t? lmao….

When you stop laughing, go and price some parts out at Porsche, then try a Chevy deal.
Your laughter will turn to tears. Trust me, been there and done that.
