2021 Genesis GV70: Korea’s Vision Of A Premium Compact SUV Is Taking Shape

Genesis will soon roll out its first SUV, the GV80, which will go up against the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and their like.

But the Korean luxury brand has two more SUVs in the pipeline, one of which is the GV70 compact model we saw undergoing testing on the Nürburgring earlier this month. While the GV80 is very important for the brand, the smaller GV70 will most likely become Genesis’ best-seller when it launches sometime in late 2020 – early 2021. That’s because it will play in the most popular segment for premium vehicles.

While the GV70 spy shots gave us a pretty good idea of what to expect, peeling the camouflage off would be much better and that’s exactly what the folks from Kolesa did. Starting off from the spy photos, they envisioned the 2021 Genesis GV70 without camo and we have to say we like what we see.

The GV70 will adopt unusual proportions for a crossover with a long hood, short front overhang, and a sloping roofline towards the rear that reminds a bit of the Kia ProCeed. The C-shaped headlights and taillights remind of the bigger GV80, as does the large grille. Actually, these elements are key in defining the Genesis family’s styling identity.

The Genesis GV70 will stand out thanks to the third lateral window which has an unusual shape for a crossover and gives the vehicle an original look. Equally striking are the vertical exhaust pipes which suggest some serious firepower.

Since the GV70 is likely to use the same platform as the G70 sedan, we should expect the same engine lineup including a 252 HP 2.0-liter turbo-four and a 365 HP 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6. All-wheel drive will likely be standard, at least for the six-cylinder model.

That’s distinctive and it looks fantastic.

  • MayTheBestCarWin05

These new Genesis crossovers can’t come soon enough.

Cadillac clearly isn’t going to put out a truly premium offering so let’s leave it to the Koreans to give us a compelling alternative to the Germans.

Hoping the GV70/80 were worth the wait.

    • dumblikeyou2

And by German, you clearly mean Volkswagen only because ain’t nobody interested in the German-three are thinking, “hmm, I could have a fancy Hyundai instead of this Mercedes”.

      • MayTheBestCarWin05

Listen. We get it. They’re an upstart luxury brand.

They likely aren’t going to get German loyalists immediately.

However, I’m just exited to see Hyundai take a swing at luring buyers in that space.

  • Mariusz Mitera

It kinda looks like a baby Bentley Bentega

    • dumblikeyou2

Not kinda, it clearly looks like a Bentley.

  • kan hu

They always make wrong renderings. Lol
    Ex) GV80

  • Romain AA

    Hello Mercedes

  • WalthamDan

Looks 100% better than the GV80. This could do well in sales.

  • Dude

Looks great imo. I just hope the interior is better than the other Genesis models. Especially the g70

    • Danny Boy

      I love my G70’s interior.

    • Danny Boy

It could definitely be better tho…

  • Maykel

Side and rear are close but front is nowhere near. Pretty lazy imo.

  • TruthSlayer

    Can we say Photoshop….

    • Arct1c

Well, it IS a render, hun.

  • Bash

This looks promising and cool. I instantly loved it. Not sure about the grille though but if it did eventually look like this. It will be great.

  • Toronado_II

Not bad ! I would like more agressive headlight or, at least, more elegant.

  • TrevP

Genesis has me catchin’ all the feels.

  • I like it!!! ?

  • Rocket

Not bad. I’m afraid the target audience might see a little too much wagon, however. Works for me though.

  • MarketAndChurch

I hope it looks more like this, I’m not a fan of the previous boxier designs, like this https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/33f924eb634eca45999b823493842378f232d705d748f76b9384a90aba420e13.jpg

  • dumblikeyou2

I mean, if the Bentley ripoff grille works for Ford, it might as well for Hyundai.

    • Arct1c

Ford has an Aston Martin ripoff grille. Not Bentley.

      • dumblikeyou2
        • Arct1c

That’s Lincoln. Not Ford. Yes, Lincoln is owned by Ford, but you said FORD. Not Lincoln.

          • dumblikeyou2

I know what I’m saying. Ford uses the Bentley grille design on their Navigator. Now Hyundai is using it on this concept CUV.

          • dumblikeyou2

I know what I’m saying. Ford uses the Bentley grille design on the Continental and the rest of their line-up. Now Hyundai is using it on this concept CUV.
But don’t think I’m saying that what Hyundai is doing doesn’t look good. It does. They do a much better job of copying something but still making it look like people under the age of 65 would drive it unlike the Continental or Navigator.

  • Jawohl

I find it really odd that same country that builds Samsung consumer electronics and white goods as well as exploding LG batteries can also build good products???

    • Smith

Except they have never built the Genesis cars, just show they as prototypes, never production.

  • Craig

Very good looking. Genesis is my favourite brand.

    • donald seymour

      Mines too.

    • Danny Boy

      Mines three!

    • Smith

Shame it is just a ghost brand.

      • Craig

        What does that mean?

  • William rowe

if it looks good as this rending, Genesis will have a huge hit on their hands, esp if it is priced right too and drives as good as it looks

    • Smith

Possibly but they have had the brand for many many years and never put anything into production.

  • KAG25

Not bad, keep the interior clean and simple

  • Danny Boy

Man Genesis wants THA SMOKE! They’re knocking it out of the park every time. …..
    #GOODJOBGENY

    • Smith

Yeah, would be great if they ever put one into production.

  • Smith

This is the most talked about, non-existing brand in the world. Never see any of them on the road or any dealerships and the brand is as good as vapor-ware, so why keep promoting these prototypes that never get to production. Saw the brand at Detroit car show 5 or 6 years ago with their luxury sedan, never got to market though. What a waste of space!

    • Danny Boy

Im a owner of G70 here in Dallas Tx, and I see many Genesis product! And yes, they should’ve had a different roll out plan, but it is what it is. I’m sure they’d do it differently if they had a do over, but give them a break. The SUV’s are coming for all of the Soccer Parents! Calm down. ……

  • Biggsy

This is the one I’ve been waiting for.
