Hundreds Of Germans Lose Their Driver’s License For Using E-Scooters At Oktoberfest

Electric scooters are plaguing cities across the globe and hundreds of Germans have found a new reason to hate them.

During an Oktoberfest celebration in Munich, 414 people were caught scooting under the influence. While that doesn’t sound too bad, CNN reports 254 of those people ended up losing their driver’s license.

That seems a bit extreme, but Germany classifies e-scooters as motorized vehicles and this means drunk driving rules apply to them. This is noted on the police department’s website which highlights the blood-alcohol limit of 0.5 mg of alcohol per mm of blood. Furthermore, the department says having a blood-alcohol content of 1.1 mg of alcohol per mm of blood will result in a driving ban.

Since the rules on e-scooters just went into effect in June, many people were probably unaware of the serious consequences of scooting under the influence. In particular, the revocation of 254 driver licenses is more than 6% of the annual total of approximately 4,000 driver’s licenses which are revoked every year in Munich due to alcohol, medication or drug abuse.

The penalties vary depending on the level of impairment and whether or not an accident was involved, but people caught with a blood-alcohol content of 1.1 mg of alcohol per mm of blood will have their license revoked for a period of time ranging from six months up to five years. They’ll also have three points added to their record and could face a possible examination by medical professionals – among other things.

Even drivers with a blood-alcohol content of 0.5 mg can get a driving ban of up to three months and a fine of up to €1,500 ($1,643 / £1,346).

Few years a ago in Belgium you could loose your drivers license for riding a bicycle while under the influence.
So why not just use the car ?

  • Subi-Rubicon1

I’ve never used one of those e-Scooters so just curious if the vendor makes this knowledge known or if the responsibility of the end user to figure it out?

    • McFly

If they have a driver’s license, that knowledge is already known. You don’t drive a motor vehicle when tanked.

This is just a result of the idea that you are free to do as you will just because you’ve got a new toy.

But I guess there is some user agreement – that people sign without reading – that informs the user that the vehicle is a vehicle. 🙂

      • Subi-Rubicon1

        Thanks, makes sense.

  • Aeromann

    They are driving like morons…

  • McFly

I think Germans actually make a distinction between being allowed to buy a beer outdoors and being allowed to drive a vehicle when drunk. Mostly because they are two completely different things.

  • Oscar Cereijo

Putting stupidity aside, one thing is clear: only when a driving licence is required to use one (motor or not) vehicle, ONLY THEN that driving licence could be revoked…

    • McFly

So if I drive my motorcycle when drunk, I should keep my license to drive a school bus?

I think it’s reasonable to revoke the license of a person who commits a traffic violation that would have stopped them from getting that license in the first place.

      • Oscar Cereijo

That’s the point, you DO need a driving licence to ride a motorbike. The problem is that if you don’t need a driving licence, then it wouldn’t be “fair” that the same violation would have different charges depending if you have or don’t a driving licence.

Also notice that some European Union countries use a point-based driving licence.
