Is Ford’s Mustang-Inspired Electric SUV Going To Be Rear-Wheel Drive?

In contrast to the rest of its kind, which are either front- or all-wheel drive, it appears as though Ford’s upcoming Mustang-inspired electric SUV will be rear-wheel drive.

Last week, Ford announced that buyers of its electric SUV will have access to the FordPass Charging Network that consists of more than 12,000 charging stations thanks to a collaboration with Electrify America in the U.S. and IONITY in Europe.

Hidden within an Electrify America press release regarding the FordPass Charging Network was a sentence stating the following; “Ford will be releasing its all-new, Mustang-inspired electric SUV, that has a targeted EPA-estimated range of 300 miles with an extended battery and rear-wheel drive, in late 2020.”

There’s been a lot of talk about the ‘Stang-inspired SUV, but this is the first time we’ve heard about it being rear-wheel drive and having an ‘extended battery’ option.

The Drive, who first picked up on the statement, reached out to Ford to verify the press release from Electrify America. Shortly afterwards, the press release was updated and gone was any mention of RWD and an extended battery.

It remains to be seen if the variant with 300-miles (483 km) of range will be rear-wheel drive or if it will use an all-wheel drive system. Whatever the case may be, driving enthusiasts should be pleased to know that the crossover should be able to light up its rear tires with ease.

Ford recently shared a video online previewing the EV, busting a number of myths surrounding electric vehicles and confirming that the crossover will be launched in the fall of 2020. There’s also a chance the production model or, more likely, a concept could be unveiled at the LA Auto Show next month.

I truly believe that all EV’s should feature an option to choose whether the driver wants engage the AWD or RWD or FWD. Or two of those three modes.

I am a Ford fan, after reading Hoffman’s American Icon, its hard not to be. I am saddened to see the company seemingly falling over itself and struggling to do what they should be rock-star good at. I wish for them to find their groove and show off their know how.
