Mountune Squeezes A Whopping 684 HP Out Of Ford’s 2.3L EcoBoost Engine

If you’re a Ford Focus RS fan, then all you’ll want for Christmas is Mountune’s new tuning package that’s in development.

Aimed at the Mk3 that’s powered by the 2.3-liter EcoBoost, the bundle of upgrades has brought a jaw-dropping 684 horsepower and 566.5 pound-feet (768 Nm) of torque to the party, with E30 fuel. That’s nearly double the output of the stock Focus RS, which enjoys 350 hp and does the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.7 seconds.

Measured on the dyno, the staggering result has made the tuner claim that this could be the highest output four-pot out there, leaving Mercedes-AMG’s 2.0-liter, turbo-four far behind. The mill that powers the new AMG 45 S lineup generates 415 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. Whether Mountune’s creation is as reliable, is a very good question, indeed.

They did not say when they’re planning to launch the new kit, but if you cannot wait for it to come out, then you could still enjoy a very impressive 512 horsepower, via the M520 package. Mixing it with supercars in a straight-line acceleration is going to set you back £5,975 ($7,299/€6,651) in the UK. Or, for a more reasonable £2,950 ($3,604/€3,284), you could get the M450 pack, which will still make your Focus RS more powerful than the new A45 S, giving it 444 hp.

While tuners cannot stop modifying the previous-gen Focus RS, Ford is working on the Mk4 and should launch it next year, making it more powerful and faster than its predecessor.

The first and obvious questions is “But for how long?” From what I know, very little, Mountune seems like a tuning brand that works closely with OMs and usually has quality tunes. But pushing a Focus engine that hard doesn’t seem smart. If it were a 90’s era Toyota engine, fine.

The reliability is less to do with who makes the engine and more to do with the fundamental design. This Mountune engine has all-new internals that can withstand the serious boost pressures, but the biggest hurdle with the 2.3 EcoBoost is the open-deck block design which isn’t as strong as a closed-deck. I would suggest Mountune have strengthened the block for this application.

Wouldn’t who develops the engine influence the fundamental design? Different manufactures can vary wildly in the engines from each others.

WOW! Not bad! I was wondering if someone was going to do something similar with the new Explorer ST?

amazing that it holds up, but for how long. still amazing

Blowing up in three ..two …one..

Amazing that they can get that much power out of the engine.
I share the other posters concer for how long it could sustain that output, and also wonder how the rest of the power train would cope with the power and torque.
If were drivable, and reliable, it would make for an amazing drive in a Focus or Mustang.
