Nissan Ariya Concept Previews Rogue-Sized Electric SUV For America And Beyond

Nissan will (officially) pull the wraps off their Ariya Concept at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, on October 23, but the cat’s already out of the bag.

The first images of the show car that were circulated on the web by Creative Trend and Web Car depict an electric crossover, with large enclosed grille, LED lights and sloping roofline, vaguely inspired by the IMx and IMQ concepts.

We knew that Nissan was readying an electric crossover, a prototype of which was shown to U.S. dealers at a meeting in August, according to an Autonews report, with a near production concept being prepared for the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

Nissan IMx Concept

Those who saw it at the dealer meeting in the States described it as having a hood shorter than the IMx, on which it was largely based, and a futuristic cabin that’s unlike anything on sale today. The vehicle is believed to adopt the company’s next-gen semi-autonomous driving technology, the ProPilot 2.0.

In terms of size, it’s expected to have a similar footprint to the Rogue (called X-Trail in Europe and other markets), while the clever packaging has reportedly opened up more space inside, comparable to the larger Murano.

The zero-emission SUV should be quite fast, with an estimated 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint that could take under 5 seconds. The battery pack, whose capacity remains unknown, is said to give it a range of 300 miles (483 km) on a single charge.

If the information checks out, then Americans should get Nissan’s new zero-emission vehicle in the second half of 2021.

H/T to our reader Marcus Meyn!

  • Marcus Meyn

If executed correctly, this may be Nissan’s biggest hit.

  • Bash

    Who is beyond?

  • WalthamDan

    That’s sort of cute

  • TB

    Looks a bit Lexus-ish….

  • Dennis Scipio

    This looks pretty interesting.

So you bought some Japanese magazine and will write an article about every news in it? ( Mitsubishi, Nissan Arya, Subaru Levorg)…

    • Joe

Well no, the magazine cover was leaked a few days ago and it’s not due to come out until the 24th. It was already posted in a comment section on here a few days ago. Only now are they catching up on the tips from it and addressing them model by model.

  • MarketAndChurch

Its what the market wants, Nissan is just following industry cues and trying to get in on what trends will be hot next. Which is good because it means that consumers won’t have to pay luxury prices for cutting-edge designs.

  • Brian Regan

Agreed. At first glance I thought this was a Buick.

  • Honda NSX-R

I’m assuming this would compete against the Ford Mach-E or whatever it’ll be called

  • Joe

It’s interesting this is being reported as the size of the Rogue/X-Trail… Japanese media seem to expect this to be smaller, between the Juke and Qashqai, to receive instead of both of those models.

  • Paul

I like the thing and hope they get it right.

  • Eythan Aldrich

are you sure about that….some countries are going to launch the second-gen leaf and this rumor showed up…..sorry but some rumors won’t buy it for me

    • RobSez

I live less than 15 miles from the Nissan manufacturing plant in Smyrna, TN. I have neighbors I know who work there. Nissan isn’t making batteries for the Nissan Leaf anymore and has sold their battery plant that is on the same property. My neighbors tell me 2020 is it for the Leaf. The Ariya may be the Leaf’s replacement but ask yourself why would a company replace it’s flagship EV at the height of it’s popularity?

  • Joe

Wrong. I can’t speak for what US dealers do regarding their EV infrastructure management, but the Leaf is definitely not being killed. It’s one of the planet’s best selling EVs. So yeah, nope.

    • RobSez

Nissan sold the battery manufacturing plant on the property of it’s Smyrna, TN plant. The plant where the Leaf is made in the US. Batteries for the Leaf aren’t even made there any more. People actually building the Leaf in Smyrna are saying 2020 is it. This Ariya may be a replacement, but I seriously doubt it.

      • Joe

The Leaf is also built in the UK & Japan. I’d imagine they’d start importing it instead if US production were to end. Nissan’s profits plunged 99% last year apparently, I guess that’s triggered a wave of cost-cutting.

        • RobSez

You’re probably right. I know the Leaf is a hot item outside the US. We’ve been driving one for a long time and are still mostly (hate the new cup holders location) in love with the Leaf. We just picked up a 2019 SL+ in May. We are huge Leaf fans, but becoming more disenchanted with Nissan and less of a fan with each passing day.

  • Alduin

It’s a Nissan it’ll have a problem with the transmission sooner or later.

    • Hmmmmm

      EVs don’t have a transmission.

      • Alduin

They have a type of drive unit.

  • Alduin

    Nissan Queef.

  • Nowan

    Cadillac and Mitsubishi front

  • Six Thousand Times

Better looking than a Model X

  • The body looks more like a Mazda, than the actual Mazda Concept

  • Andy Mansh

Looking at the photos, I don’t know why they’re calling this a ‘concept’.

It doesn’t have the usual pie-in-the-sky interior of a concept. Look at the exterior – it even has DOORHANDLES FFS.

It’s clearly a production ready car. Maybe they’ll try to present this as a shock announcement!

  • Jack Eaker

sure looks like the next murano.which I have had 5. and 12 nissans all with cvt’s.never a problem, but trade them in 2 to t2.5 years.
