A new documentary looking at BMW‘s foray into the world of Formula E and its push to develop electric powertrains has been released on Amazon.

The film is dubbed Racing into the future: Formula E as a TechLab for the BMW Group. A particular focus is given to the development of a racing powertrain and the applicability of that technology to BMW’s road-going cars. While Formula E cars do all feature the same chassis and battery unit, teams including BMW have control over systems including the on-board electronics, wiring, cooling system, rear suspension, rear frame, dampers, and software.

Filming took place during the 2018-2019 Formula E season with the BMW iFE.18, the first Formula E car developed by the German carmaker.

“The film shows impressively that the Formula E project is much more than just another race to us,” BMW Group Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt said of the film. “For the BMW Group, Formula E is a TechLab for the development of future electric production drive trains. The collaboration between the motorsport and production departments is a cycle. The Formula E drive benefitted from the experience of the production engineers during development.”

BMW’s latest Formula E racer is the iFE.20. It wears an intriguing white, blue, purple, and black livery and like all other current Formula E cars, pumps out a maximum of 335 HP and can reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.8 seconds.

Racing into the future: Formula E as a TechLab for the BMW Group is available exclusively on the Amazon Germany, USA, and UK websites and can be found here.
