BMW has announced pricing details for the 2020 2-Series Gran Coupe in the U.S. market, where the first examples are expected to arrive in March 2020.

American customers will be offered the choice between two models of the new Bavarian compact four-door model: the base 228i xDrive -starting from $38,495, including a $995 destination fee- and the M235i xDrive, priced from $46,495. As you can tell by their nameplates, both models will be offered with BMW’s all-wheel drive system as standard.

This makes the new BMW 228i xDrive Gran Coupe $850 more expensive than the entry-level Mercedes CLA 250, but the Merc lacks all-wheel drive in this trim. The BMW’s more direct rival is the CLA 250 4Matic, which starts from $39,645 -including a $995 destination fee-, making it $1,200 more expensive than the Bavarian model.

The new BMW 228i xDrive is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 228 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque. Paired to it is an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard, with BMW claiming a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 6 seconds flat and a top speed of 151 mph (243 km/h).

Standard equipment of the 228i xDrive Gran Coupe includes things like a set of 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps and fog lights, power front sport seats, the iDrive 6.0 with an 8.8-inch touchscreen display and 4 years of complimentary connected services, and more.

The range-topping $46,495 M235i xDrive will go against models like the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 and the Audi S3 Sedan. Mercedes hasn’t released any pricing info on its baby AMG four-door coupe yet, so the only comparison we can make is with the older Audi S3 Sedan, which starts from $43,995, meaning it’s cheaper from the BMW by $2,500.

The faster version of the 2-Series Gran Coupe is also using a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, only here it makes 301 HP and 332 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph is matter of 4.6 seconds while top speed is set at 155 mph (250 km/h).

To get an idea of its size, the new BMW model measures 178.5 in. (4,526 mm) in length, 70.9 in. (1,800mm) in width and 55.9 in. (1,420mm) in height, with a 105.1 in. (2,670mm) wheelbase, making nearly 4 inches shorter, but a tad wider than the Toyota Corolla sedan (182.5 in. long, 70.1 in. wide, 56.5 in. tall, with a 106.3 in. wheelbase).
