The 2020 Cupra Formentor is here as the first-ever model developed exclusively for the Spanish sub-brand, featuring both internal combustion power as well as plug-in hybrid technology.

Deliveries on the Formentor will begin in the last quarter of this year, with customers able to choose between a 2.0-liter TSI variant with 310 PS (305 HP), or a PHEV model with a 150 PS (148 HP) 1.4-liter TSI unit and a 115 PS (113 HP) electric motor.

With captivating design and high-performance powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid, the CUPRA Formentor will be a big step for CUPRA. Named after the wild cape on the Spanish island of Mallorca, the Formentor comes with a two-tone exterior and reasonably compact dimensions. It measures 4,450 mm (14.6 ft) in length, 1,839 mm (6 ft) in width, stands 1,511 mm (4.95 ft) tall and has a wheelbase of 2,680 mm (8.79 ft). Trunk volume meanwhile is 450 liters (15.9 cu.ft).

The Formentor also boasts full-width taillights and 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, available with a Copper finish. Customers however will be able to choose between the following colorways: Urban Silver, Midnight Black, Magnetic Tech and Candy White – all metallic, three special paints in Graphene Grey, Dark Camouflage and Desire Red, plus two matte options in Petrol Blue Matte and Magnetic Tech Matte.

Inside, there are high-quality materials such as brushed dark aluminum and copper accents, bucket seats (available in both Petrol Blue and Black leather), full LED wraparound ambient lighting (which also flashes yellow when Blind Spot Detection or Exit Assist are activated), a flat-bottom steering wheel, a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment display and a customizable digital gauge cluster.

Tell me about the performance

The Cupra Formentor will be available with a choice of two powertrains, one of them being a plug-in hybrid.

The internal combustion power plant is a 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged petrol engine with 4WD and a seven-speed DSG automatic, producing 310 PS (305 HP) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. The hybrid meanwhile mixes a 1.4-liter 150 PS (148 HP) TSI unit with a 115 PS (113 HP) electric motor and a 13 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The eHybrid drivetrain (which features the same gearbox as the ICE unit) delivers a peak output of 245 PS (241 HP) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, with an all-electric range of 50 km (31 miles).

The Spanish crossover also comes with Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), which constantly monitors the road surface and driver inputs, making imperceptible changes to the setup so as to offer a more engaging drive – available profiles include Comfort, Sport, Cupra and Individual.

As for onboard tech, the 12-inch infotainment display comes with both voice activation and gesture control and is compatible with Apple CarPlay (wireless) and Android Auto (wired). Other tech features include the four USB-C ports, an embedded SIM (eSIM) card, plus driver assistance technologies such as Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, and Exit Assist.
