General Motor has teamed up with Ventec Life Systems and StopTheSpread.org to increase production of lifesaving ventilators.

As part of the tie up, GM will be providing their “logistics, purchasing and manufacturing expertise” to help increase ventilator production.

In a statement, GM CEO Mary Barra said “We are working closely with Ventec to rapidly scale up production of their critically important respiratory products to support our country’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.” She added the automaker is also exploring other ways to “help in this time of crisis.”

Her sentiments were echoed by Ventec’s CEO, Chris Kiple, who said “By tapping their expertise, GM is enabling us to get more ventilators to more hospitals much faster. This partnership will help save lives.”

While GM was the first to announce the move, President Trump tweeted “Ford, General Motors and Tesla are being given the go ahead to make ventilators and other metal products, FAST!”

Ford has been relatively quiet about their plans but, over the weekend, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted they’ve had a “long engineering discussion with Medtronic about state-of-the-art ventilators.”

Medtronic has already increased ventilator production by more than 40% and aims to more than double production to cope with demand caused by the pandemic. As the company explained last week, “High-performance ventilators play a critical role in the management of patients with severe respiratory illness, such as COVID-19, who require assistance because they cannot breathe effectively. By placing a patient on such a ventilator, the patient’s lungs are permitted to rest and recover while the ventilator performs the functions of supplying oxygen and simulating the actions of breathing.”
