A semi-truck has been wrecked in Pendleton, Indiana after being struck by a fast-moving freight train.

The driver of the semi-truck was reportedly unable to get the vehicle over the train crossing and decided to abandon it and just leave it there. It’s claimed that local construction crews tried to move the truck before a train came, but they were too late.

Dramatic video from the scene shows the freight train slam into the cabin of the truck, immediately separating it from its trailer that was carrying a large shipping container. The force of the impact crumpled the cab and ripped it from its chassis.

It took a long time before the train was able to come to a stop having pushed the truck for several hundred feet along the train tracks. When it did stop, the truck’s cab caught on fire and was totally destroyed. Fortunately, the driver of the train only suffered minor injuries. Had the train struck the trailer and thick steel shipping container, we suspect the impact would have been even more severe – and the consequences possibly more dire.

So, apart from never trying to drive around the gates when they’re down, one more thing you should consider is that, if you’re driving across train tracks up a slope, you’d better make sure you can actually get across.
