Nissan Blames Supplier Technician For Third 2021 Rogue Recall In As Many Months

Nissan has announced the third recall in as many months for the third generation Rogue, which it says was caused by a manufacturing error at the supplier.

The issue this time is with the rear brake caliper assemblies that could be missing an internal bushing that secures the O-seal ring. The latter could potentially move and deform, leading to possible brake fluid leak that would increase the braking distance.

“A technician at the supplier (Mexico’s ADVICS Manufacturing) did not initiate the automatic cycle for inserting the bushing in production”, an official NHTSA document reports. “The Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) did not detect the missing bushing because the process verification logic had been inadvertently deleted due to a 4M change. As a result, the brake caliper parts continued through the production line without the bushing inserted.”

Instead of inspecting each vehicle, Nissan’s dealers will use a barcode scanner to scan the VIN and the QR codes of the left and right rear brake calipers. If the number is confirmed, then they will replace it. All work will be performed free of charge.

There are 14,054 Rogue SUVs included in this safety campaign, with a 1 percent estimated defect rate, which were built between January 9 and February 24, 2021. Recall is expected to kick off on June 10.

On a related note, ADVICS Manufacturing also makes the brake calipers for the 2022 Pathfinder and 2022 Infiniti QX60. However, since they are still “in production trials”, the “suspect parts were collected prior to outflow”.
