The driver of a BMW i8 has been arrested and convicted on drug-related charges after leading police on a high-speed chase in the UK.

Dashcam footage from a police vehicle initially shows the i8 being driven by Simon Pagett cruise past the police car on the M6 highway, driving along the emergency lane to avoid traffic. The officer immediately starts following the hybrid sports car and at one stage, Pagett indicates to the left and begins to pull over to the side of the road. However, it was simply a bluff and he uses the opportunity to pin the throttle and speed off into the distance.

Footage from the chase shows the 39-year-old speeding through several sets of red lights and exceeding 90 mph in a 30 mph zone. At one stage, he drives over a curb and his 40-year-old passenger, Dean Stone, jumps out of the i8 clutching a backpack and runs off into the bushes.

The chase continues for several more minutes before Pagett finally decides he has no way of outrunning the police officer chasing him, who remains remarkably calm throughout. Pagett pulls over to the side of a residential street and gives up.

Birmingham Live reports that, not long after the driver was apprehended, Stone was arrested trying to get into a taxi nearby. Authorities then discovered five 1 kg slabs of cocaine that Stone had dumped with the backpack in nearby bushes.

The two men pleaded guilty to possessing drugs with intent to supply. On May 27, Pagett was jailed for seven years while Stone was sentenced to six years in prison.
