One day after Renaut’s eWays ElectroPop event, fellow Alliance member Nissan announced its own plans for the electric future. These include a flagship £1 billion ($1.4 billion) EV Hub to be built in Sunderland, UK alongside Envision AESC’s new battery manufacturing facility. Nissan also confirmed a brand new electric crossover to be built in the UK for global markets, previewing it with a teaser.

The EV36Zero plan comes at the 35th anniversary of Nissan’s Sunderland plant, with the goal of creating “a world-first EV manufacturing ecosystem” to help the Japanese company move towards carbon neutrality. An initial investment of £1 billion ($1.4 billion) will create 6,200 new jobs in the UK, including more than 900 at Nissan and 750 at Envision AESC.

Envision AESC, who already operates Europe’s first battery plant in Sunderland since 2012 manufacturing batteries for the Nissan LEAF and eNV200, will build a new gigafactory on the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP) after an investment of £450 million ($621 million). This plant is independent of the new plant in Douai, France, and will supply batteries for up to 100,000 Nissan EVs per year.

The factory will have an initial capacity of 9GWh but it could reach 25GWh by 2030 thanks to a future investment of £1.8 billion ($2.5 billion). The potential capacity for the more distant future is 35GWh, which would match the Tesla gigafactory in Nevada. The Chinese company plans on manufacturing Gen5 battery cell technology providing a 30 percent increase in energy density thus offering more range.

New electric crossover teased

Nissan also announced a brand new electric crossover destined for global markets that will be built in the UK with a production of up to 100,000 units per year. From the £1 billion ($1.4 billion) investment, up to £423 million ($584 million) will be directed to the new model. It will be based on the CMF-EV platform that also underpins the Nissan Ariya and the upcoming Renault MéganE.

As we can see from the official teaser, the yet-unnamed crossover has a coupe-style roofline, large-diameter wheels, and incorporates Nissan’s new-generation styling with futuristic LED lights. It is expected to be more affordable than the larger Ariya, with new battery technology “making the switch to electric driving even more accessible”.

Finally, Nissan, in collaboration with the Sunderland City Council, will build a Microgrid saving 55,000 of carbon annually thanks to solar farms and a 1 MW battery storage facility made of used batteries.
