The Lucid Air has been named the 2022 MotorTrend Car of the Year, becoming just the third electric vehicle to take out top honors in the test during the last decade. Meanwhile, the Genesis GV70 has been named SUV of the Year.

This year’s test consisted of 25 vehicles before the judges narrowed the field down to seven cars and nine SUVs. The finalists in the Car of the Year test consisted of the Mercedes-Benz EQS, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota GR 86, Porsche Taycan, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and Lucid Air, while the finalists in the SUV of the Year were the Ford Bronco, Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Genesis GV70, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Jeep Wrangler 392 and 4xe, Kia Sorento, and VW ID.4.

Motor Trend was one of the first publications to test the Lucid Air and was left stunned with what they found. The complex powertrain of the car distinguishes it from all of its competitors and in the U.S., there is no other EV that can match its range. In fact, the Dream Edition Range variant can travel 520 miles (836 km) on a single charge as per the EPA.

Then we come to the Genesis GV70. Entering into a space as competitive as the premium SUV segment is never easy but Genesis has managed to nail it with the GV70, creating a vehicle with excellent exterior and interior design. Motor Trend also praised the value proposition of the GV70, noting that even the $42,045 base model has all-wheel drive, adaptive cruise control, lane centering, blind-spot monitoring, and a 14.5-inch infotainment screen. It even comes with a five-year / 60,000-mile warranty.

According to Motor Trend editorial operations director Mike Floyd, “it simply smokes the competition on price and feature set.”
