BMW is getting ready to unveil the facelifted 3-Series this year and following sightings of the sedan and Touring variants, our spy photographers caught a sporty-looking prototype with M Performance parts out in the open.

The white prototype of the facelifted BMW 3-Series is fitted with a set of multi-spoke wheels – likely 19-inches in diameter – shod in performance tires. The front and rear ends are camouflaged, hiding the revised LED graphics on the headlights and the redesigned bumpers.

Just like in the outgoing model, the M Performance parts will include bumper extensions, side moldings, side sills, a spoiler lip, and a rear diffuser, made of carbon fiber. All these are combined with the sporty bumpers of the 3-Series M-Package that comes with larger intakes often finished in blacked trim. At the same time, they are offering a cheaper alternative to the full-blown BMW M3 performance sedan – at least from a visual point of view – without the infamous double-coffin grille.

The seventh generation of the BMW 3-Series (G20) was launched in 2018, which means it will be four years old this year. The mid-life cycle update will bring discreet visual changes and more technology inside the cabin. The latter will include the BMW Curved Display consisting of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen for the latest iDrive 8 infotainment.

The facelifted model will retain the sedan and Touring bodystyles. Engine options will likely be mildly updated for achieving lower emissions, while a fully electric model – sibling to the i4 – could make a nice addition to the range next to the existing PHEV variant. We will learn more about the 3-Series in the coming months as the full reveal is expected before the end of 2022.
