Toyota published a new commercial for the GR86 in Japan showcasing great drifting and drone-flying skills. The 30-second clip shows the GR86 drifting side by side with its predecessor, the GT86, closely followed by the iconic AE86 from the ’80s.

The commercial was shot during nighttime at the Fuji Speedway, with the help of experienced drivers and drone operators. The “Drift Meets Drone” title can be taken literally since drones actually crashed on the vehicles in order to create the impressive effect of going through the cabin during the drift.

The white GR86 that is leading the pack was driven by Masahiro Sasaki, a professional driver that was heavily involved in the development of the rear-wheel-drive sportscar. While drifting the models in formation is quite demanding for the drivers, shooting the commercial was also challenging for the drone operator who followed the cars from a very close distance at high speed.

As we can see from the official “behind the scenes” footage, the process included many hours of practice and trials before they managed to get the desired outcome. Editing also played an important role to make seamless transitions between takes.

The Japanese commercial is closely following “The Focus Group” ad which airs in the United States and involves drifting Toyota sportscars in an abandoned mall outside of Chicago.
