Both the 2022-2023 BMW 5-Series and BMW X3 models have received TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

While there are plenty of other new models that frequently received TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards from the IIHS, doing so remains an important achievement as vehicles must earn good ratings in six IIHS crashworthiness evaluations. These include the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength, and head restraints tests.

Furthermore, vehicles must also be available with a front crash prevention system that earns advanced or superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime vehicle-to-vehicle pedestrian evaluations. To receive the lower-tier TOP SAFETY PICK award, a vehicle must be available with a good or acceptable headlight system while for the higher-end TOP SAFETY PICK+, good or acceptable headlights must be standard across all trims.

The 2022-2023 BMW 5-Series and X3 meet all the relevant requirements for the higher-tier award with acceptable-rated headlights standard on the 5-Series and all X3 trim levels equipped with at least a good-rated headlight system.

In addition, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that the 5-Series comes with a standard front crash prevention system earning a superior rating in the vehicle-to-vehicle evaluation and an advanced rating in the vehicle-to-pedestrian test. The X3’s front crash prevention system earned superior ratings in both evaluations.
