Rivian seems to be taking the bull by the horns with regard to design issues on its R1T pickup truck. One of its most novel optional features, the Camp Kitchen is no longer available for order as it undergoes a redesign. The electric automaker says that it doesn’t have a timeline for when the option will return and it sounds as though the price may change too.

The much advertised Camp Kitchen feature of the Rivian R1T slides out of the also novel Gear Tunnel behind the passenger compartment of the electric truck. Rivian reached out to customers and posted on its own website about the change.

The message said in part: “We’re temporarily pausing production of the Camp Kitchen as we work on an updated design… As our team has continued testing the Camp Kitchen in various environments, we’ve found opportunities to refine the design and make our version of cooking in the wild even better. The redesign also includes updating the Gear Tunnel Shuttle, which is included in the Camp Kitchen package.”

It also clarified that any customers with the Camp Kitchen on their current orders would see it gone by October 18th. For now, the company isn’t giving away any details about when it will be available once more. It did confirm that should a customer still not have their vehicle by the time the Camp Kitchen comes back online, they then could add it back.

Unfortunately, Rivian’s language surrounding the change casts doubt on whether or not it’ll cost any more when it returns. The company specifically says that “We’ll share pricing details once we’ve finalized design updates to the Camp Kitchen.” Rivian was also non-committal on a follow-up FAQ about whether or not customers who had their Camp Kitchen order canceled would be price-protected.

“We’ll share details once we’ve finalized the Camp Kitchen redesign and set new pricing,” it says. For the time being, it sounds as though Rivian is still in the very early stages of the redesign.
