Automotive design isn’t easy and that’s quite obvious as most of us look around public roads. The vast majority of cars are dull and drab without any especially pleasing features. And while we oftentimes focus on the ones that we find attractive, we think it’s worth asking what’s the ugliest car on sale today.

Keep in mind that this isn’t about designs that are simply boring and leaning toward ugly. For example, the new Mercedes EQ line looks sort of like a melted jelly bean to some but at the same time, it’s not dramatically offensive. For that, we need to look for cars that are aggressively overstyled most likely.

Take one quick look at the Lexus LM and try to tell me that it’s a cohesive design. It’s certainly undeniably Lexus but it’s not doing the brand any favors with that styling. Sure, it’s not sold in America but that should tell you something all by itself. And we’re not limiting this QOTD to American-market cars anyway.

In our recent interview with automotive designer Sasha Selipanov, he made a point that might help narrow the field: “Cars which do not have a clear mission are very difficult to design…. Project brief should ideally generate a strong emotional response. Otherwise, it can be difficult to find a shape for something that feels bland, contrived, and confused.”

One vehicle that seems to be confusing to many is the all-new BMW M2. In one of our recent question of the day’s about the most beautiful coupe for $100,000 or less, the M2 was nowhere near the top of the list. In fact, many of you called it out specifically for being the opposite of beautiful.

I get the feeling that there are going to be a few BMWs that end up on this list. The XM, the X7, the 4-Series, and the one that ties them all together, the iX, might all make appearances. What do you think though? What’s the ugliest car on sale right now? Let us know in the comments below.
