Audi has announced that it will take the wraps off the Activesphere concept at its “Celebration of Progress” event on January 26. The all-electric crossover sedan is intended for outdoorsy types and is one of four concepts promised by Audi that will preview the future of the brand’s design.

“The Audi Activesphere concept provides ultimate freedom and is the perfect companion for ambitious outdoor adventures,” writes Audi. “Whether it’s water sports, skiing, golfing, or challenging mountain roads—the Activesphere concept offers ultimate variability for all activities. While the concept car combines extraordinary elegance with outstanding off-road performance, its communication technology creates a unique experience—beyond the car itself.”

In August, Audi published another teaser, that showed more of the intriguing vehicle. Much like the Toyota Crown or the Peugeot 408, it has sedan-like body lines and what Audi terms a Sportback (or coupe) roofline. It sits, however, on big, chunky tires, giving it a ride height more akin to that of an SUV.

Indeed, Audi promises that the concept’s positioning as something between a car and a crossover will help it “offer maximum variability for an active lifestyle—both on and off-road.” The skis mounted atop the glass-roofed concept certainly play to that aspiration.

The concept will be a member of the “sphere” family of show cars that Audi started introducing in 2021. In addition to the Activesphere, the automaker also introduced a two-seater electric roadster with an expanding wheelbase called the Skysphere, the ultra-luxurious Grandsphere, and the large, minivan-like Urbansphere.

All are demonstrations of what can be accomplished on Audi’s upcoming electric vehicle architecture, the PPE platform. They’re also an opportunity for Audi’s designers to play with lighting, driver assistance, and other technologies to show off ideas that are brewing within the automaker’s skunkworks.
