While it is hard to beat the looks of a classic Firebird, its handling, and performance credentials are a far cry from 2023 standards. North Carolina builder Retro Designs changes that with their latest project, a fully restored 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am featuring a GM LS3 V8 engine and upgraded suspension.

Daniel Valjevac, the owner of Retro Designs, said that it was important for them to “keep the car’s golden seventies aesthetics intact” which explains the period-correct New Zealand Green shade, neatly combined with gold Firebird graphics.

After going through a complete restoration, the Trans Am looks just like when it came out of the factory with the exception of the larger diameter Snowflake alloy wheels which are shod in modern Continental tires. Likewise, the cabin has been reupholstered with high-quality leather featuring an upgraded sound system for entertainment and a new Vintage Air heating and cooling system for extra comfort.

A look under the bonnet reveals the most important upgrade which is no other than the GM LS3 engine. The 6.2-liter V8 produces 430 hp (316 kW / 436 PS), representing a significant upgrade compared to the original powertrain from the late ’70s. The small-block V8 is connected to a six-speed automatic 6L80E transmission sending power to the rear wheels. A bespoke stainless steel exhaust with Magnaflow mufflers will likely deliver a proper V8 rumble when you step into the gas.

Besides the new powertrain, the Firebird has been retrofitted with a hydroformed subframe by Detroid Speed. The modern rear suspension helps improve its ride and handling qualities together with the new rubber. Stopping power has also been upgraded with Wilwood front and rear discs, connected to Performance Online’s hydropower hydraulic braking system.

The price tag of Retro Designs’ latest Pontiac Firebird Trans Am restoration remains a mystery, but one thing is clear: it certainly wasn’t a budget project. The builder’s commissions start at $250,000, which indicates that this project likely cost a pretty penny.
