The BMW i5 is an important EV for the brand and while it probably won’t outsell combustion-powered 5-Series variants in the near future, BMW is keen to encourage sales as best it can by promoting some of its nifty features. One of these includes the ‘Anti-Theft Recorder.’
This feature is shown in action in a 40-second clip published by BMW on YouTube. The video shows two would-be thieves approaching an i5 at night while speaking with agents from a control center eager to unlock the secrets of the electric 5-Series. After finding the i5, they attempt to open the car’s doors but immediately, the alarm is triggered and they are forced to run.

Of course, having an alarm like this is nothing special. What is different with the i5 is that it uses the car’s exterior cameras to capture live images of the thieves and transmits them to the owner’s phone. The system also uses footage captured from the interior cameras and can send them to the My BMW app. BMW’s Anti-Theft Recorder is quite similar to Tesla’s Sentry Mode.
BMW has published a series of other videos to promote the i5. One of them focuses on the Remote Control Parking system where owners can easily pull their car in and out of a parking space using the app. The new EV also includes a Proactive Care system that uses real-time analysis of the i5 to detect service, maintenance, and repair requirements at an early stage.
Each and every i5 is also equipped with optimized charging stop planning on the in-built navigation system as well as the firm’s Highway Assistant & Active Lane Change feature that promises to make highway driving that much easier.
