A Chevrolet Corvette in Florida was smashed into pieces, following a crash that is suspected to be the result of an illegal street race. The driver miraculously survived albeit with serious injuries.

The accident took place at the intersection of State Highway 200 and SW 80th Street. Fire crews were dispatched to the scene at 8:24 am on Saturday morning to find the horrific aftermath of the crash. The wreckage looks like the result of an explosion, with multiple pieces of the Corvette being scattered around the area. In the photos uploaded on Facebook by Marion County Fire Rescue, we can identify a chunk of the engine, a large piece of the cabin with the two red leather-wrapped seats, the black alloy wheels, and the vented bonnet of the Corvette resting on the grass.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) believes that the white Chevrolet Corvette was involved in a street race with a silver Ford Mustang. Witnesses who called 911 said that the sportscar veered off the road, clipped a power pole, and was smashed into pieces. According to troopers who spoke to the local newspaper Ocala Star Banner, the Mustang likely cut off the Corvette, causing it to swerve and strike another car before hitting a tree and the pole.

Firefighters had to close State Highway 200 due to power lines hanging low. The police are now looking for the driver of the Ford Mustang who is described as “a white male, standing between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet. He has a neatly kept beard and weighs 225 pounds to 250 pounds. He has two tattoos on his right forearm”.
