• Porsche marks 75 years with retro Apple-inspired 963 race cars.
  • The livery references a vivid 1980 935 design in bright stripes.
  • A dinosaur-themed GT3 R called Rexy also joins the lineup.

To commemorate 75 years of Porsche Motorsport and 50 years of Apple, the German marque has unveiled a pair of specially wrapped 963 race cars for this weekend’s IMSA round at Laguna Seca. Hardcore motorsport fans will recognize the livery on sight.

Run by the Porsche Porsche Motorsport works team, the two 963s pay tribute to the 935 that contested the 1980 season in vivid Apple Computer colors. Porsche has worn plenty of memorable racing liveries over the decades. This one is certainly among the most iconic of the lot.

Just like that racer, which wore stripes in green, yellow, orange, red, purple, and blue, the 963s heading to Laguna Seca carry the same palette, though the orange has been replaced by a second shade of red. The classic Apple Computer script also appears on the front end and along the side skirts of the LMDh hypercar.

Driving Porsche’s No. 6 935 will be Kevin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor, while the No. 7 car will be driven by Julien Andlauer and Felipe Nasr. Porsche currently sits at the top of the manufacturers’ championship, having claimed victories during January’s Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Twelve Hours of Sebring in March. At last year’s round in Laguna Seca, it secured a one-two finish.

Stuttgart Meets California

“What began with the debut of the Porsche 911 at the 1963 IAA Motor Show is mirrored by the Apple Computer: both are icons that stand for innovation and continuous development by experts in Zuffenhausen, Weissach and Cupertino,” Vice President of Porsche Motorsport Thomas Laudenbach said. “This is particularly true of Porsche Motorsport, where innovations have been created since 1951 under the highest competitive demands.”

Porsche Motorsport’s factory team will also field a 911 GT3 R in the GTD Pro class and another 911 GT3 R in the GTD class over the weekend. The GTD Pro entry stands out with a green-and-white dinosaur-inspired livery, affectionately known as ‘Rexy.’
