New Toyota GT 86 Sports Coupe with 2.0-liter Engine Officially Revealed in Production Guise [Updated]

|

The wait for the most hotly anticipated (and teased, may we add..) sports cars of the year, the production version of the Toyota FT-86 2+2 coupe, is finally over as the Japanese automaker came out with all the juicy details ahead of the car's world premiere at the at the Tokyo motor show on November 30.

In Europe, the new Toyota will be called the GT 86 in tribute to the Japanese firm's GT car heritage and especially the Corolla GT (or Levin) AE86, which inspired its creation. The Japanese domestic market version will be aptly called 86.

The GT 86 is the result of a joint Toyota and Subaru development programme that will spawn two more models, the global Subaru BRZ that will also make its debut in Tokyo next week in production trim, and the North American market Scion FR-S.

All three cars will share the same platform and mechanical hardware including the Subaru-sourced flat-four, with only minor styling differences between them.

The story of the GT 86 began in October 2009 with the unveiling of the first FT-86 Concept in Tokyo and was followed by the almost production ready FT-86 II concept at the 2011 Geneva motor show this past March.

The exterior styling of the GT 86 is what we would best describe as more "Fast & Furious" than the original FT-86 concept, which had a sleeker, simpler and overall more European feel to it – but that was something to be expected after seeing the second iteration of the FT-86.

The interior design of the sports coupe is generally uncluttered featuring a three-meter instrument cluster arranged around a large tachometer and a large center screen for the audio and navigation systems.

The dashboard gets a carbon-effect trim, while there's all-black roof lining, red stitching on the upholstery, aviation-style rocker switches and lightweight, aluminium pedals. The GT 86 is also fitted with 365mm diameter steering wheel, which is said to be the smallest ever fitted to a production Toyota.

The GT 86 measures 4,240mm long (166.9-in.), 1,285mm (50.6-in.) high and 2,570mm (101.2-in) wide, which Toyota says make it the most compact four-seater sports car available in the market today.

Under the hood, you'll find Subaru’s new, horizontally opposed, naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine upgraded with Toyota's D-4S direct injection technology that delivers 200PS (197bhp/ at 7,000rpm and a peak torque of 205Nm (151.2 lb-ft) at 6,600rpm.

A standard six-speed manual gearbox with a short-throw lever or an optional six-speed automatic transmission that can be controlled using paddle shifts mounted on the steering wheel, drive the rear wheels via a limited slip differential.

Toyota says that both the powertrain and the driving position have been set "as low and as far back as possible to achieve the best balance" with the GT 86 boasting a near-perfect 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution – though the company has not yet announced the car's weight. The 2+2 sports coupe also has a very low center of gravity, at just 475mm (18.7-inches).

The suspension features MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear, while the standard version of the car rides on 17-inch wheels (18-inch for the JDM model) and is fitted with ventilated disc brakes all around.

Aside from the ABS, the GT 86 is also equipped with switchable vehicle stability control systems, which Toyota claims "have been tuned specifically to deliver dynamic stability at the limit of the car’s performance with minimal electronic intervention to help preserve the purity of the driving experience".

We'll keep digging for more information on the new Toyota GT 86 as well as its Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S siblings and bring it to you as we get it. In the meantime, hop over the break to check out the high-resolution photo gallery.

That doesn't look good to me.  The prototypes start out nice and progressively got worse.  Oh well. It is a Toyota. What would you suspect?

Teverett335 said... »November 26, 2011

I meant, what would you expect.

Rasta_Farian said... »November 26, 2011

It's probably a hoot to drive, but it's not much of a looker.

Needs more sex. :)

I personally find the design quite awkward.. Individually piece for piece the front end the rear end have strong design cues but some how they managed to miss the design linkage between those key pieces rendering the final piece awkward. The original concept had the missing "flow" the mid section really connected the car together where as the final production looks kind of like a chopped up tiburon. On top of that the production wheels honestly blow :( I'd rather have hub cabs Okay I'm joking but for goodness sake they had the opportunity to at least hide the design flaws by putting nice rims. My final rant tooooo late in my opinion.. I think we can all agree that the timing was jus off the hype for me has died. I love Toyota I really do I wouldn't b writing this if I didn't I can only pray that the scion version isn't watered down from it's concept. I wish them luck it's gonna b tough the competitions stacked 370z, Hyundai genesis r solid vehicles that has proven the track record It's gonna b tough... Toyota/ Honda man up!!!!

Base said... »November 26, 2011

why did they go for these tailights over the awesome ones on the concept?   hopefully the scion fr-s keeps its original looks

Hieuh22 said... »November 26, 2011

They would and can make it look like concept but would you willing to spend 50-70k?

Double Take said... »November 27, 2011

The interior design was obviously spear-headed by Subaru. It's not bland and/or "cutesy"-quirky enough to be full-bred Toyota.

AB said... »November 27, 2011

Wheels are so narrow!

Amalio said... »November 27, 2011

I'm in disbelieve. What happened with the prototypes? That was my hope to see one of the best looking japanese car but this looks like a crap. Everything that was the best in this model Toyota has throw away. Shame on you Toyota! Genesis looks much better.

Jeffrey Dujon said... »November 27, 2011

Not the smoking hot Ft-86 concept here but certainly Toyota can see what we cannot see here... and cars grow too. By the way the rear of this thing is absolutely... absolutely stunning. Not all bore. And with all the engine positioning and other dynamics i won't be surprised if Toyota has a mega hit on their hands.

Marcanto said... »November 27, 2011

Agree fully with Tevererr335, however may iadd that I was expecting from a two litrre mill at least 280-300 ponies.Compare this with the latest offer from FPT 1.4 litre of 170 DIN this is really a very disappointing outcome !
Nothing beats the Italian technology, I am sure when Alfa Romeo is available in the States hopefully by end 2012 beginning 2013 every real petrol head will eventually turn their head to the glorious ALFA ROMEO brand.

997gts said... »November 27, 2011

I don't think that the costs were the problem. There are so many stupid safety and crash-regulations that the original design would have probably never been approved. For example: Look at all the newer cars, all of them have a high, steep front due to pedestrian-safety.

I'm not happy with the looks either, the concept was great, but still: technically speaking this car has everything I could wish for!!

Mike said... »November 27, 2011

I like its looks (kinda' like what an updated Celica would have looked like) and the, obviously, upgrade wheels - which appear to be 18"-ers - look much better than what appears to be the standard 17's.  I'm not crazy about the red interior in a bronze-colored car however.  Otherwise, I like it.  I'm seriously considering trading my gen-5 Prelude on one of these.

Hmm!  Got that Mazda hump in the front fenders.

toydropantherbomb said... »November 27, 2011

It is very interesting that Toyota left the weight of the car out of the measurements on the char.

Lets face it, 197 hp motor in a sports car is not going to make this much of a sports car from 0 to 60 if it weight is not very lite and seems to me if it was toyota would has said so in the chart, unless I miss it somewhere.

The outside is too busy  looking with those busy curves and the interside looks like a child put it together, I will take a hyundai Genesis Coupe with the 350 HP V6 over this "toy"ota and for that matter even the Genesis Coupes 4 has 274 hp.

I don't see hyundai, ford and chevy loosing much sleep over this car.

toydropantherbomb said... »November 27, 2011

How would a slow unpowered sports car be fun to drive?

truthhurtsthemost said... »November 27, 2011

Some people I know will say oh please these reviews are from toyota haters, true but I ask you this, why is toyota hated by so many ?

Slow, Unpowered? Only if you drive a Ferrari....
Rear wheel drive, high rpm engine.... suspension set seems to be good.....If it is lightweight is a winner.

Amalio said... »November 27, 2011

Sorry mates but safety issues? What safety issues have to do with tai lights? And I am not a Toyota hater. I even like Toyota but this car is a disappointment for me.

Phontsolo said... »November 27, 2011

It's not all about power. Weight is a huge factor in speed. If you don't know that then you obviously have no clue what you are talking about.

Phontsolo said... »November 27, 2011

You know that thing cool the aftermarket? Get your own wide wheels. They no doubt will fit.

jack said... »November 27, 2011

Looks like an overweight econobox.

Paul B said... »November 27, 2011

Actually I think its come out a bit better than I was expecting.

Catalin said... »November 27, 2011

It looks great, but this is not the problem. What's with the 2 liter naturally aspirated engine ? This is too weak for this car !

please get him some education said... »November 27, 2011

its under powered first off secondly 200hp for this light of a sports car is plenty. Every car doesnt ned a 600hp V8 or something rediculous like that just to be fun to drive get outta here....

I take back what I said before about the Toyota, I like it, nice dashboard and gauges, the layout is efficient and easy to read, I like the wheel and the interior design, especially with the red accents. The car looks great from behind and has a pretty good profile.  One of the only Toyotas that I like the look of.  I'm sure they'll offer a turbocharged version soon.

I'd buy one

Pureworx said... »November 27, 2011

a natural aspirated 2.0 litre reliable subaru engine producing 197hp, thats almost 98.5hp per litre  vs a 1.4 turbo italian unreliable engine... please shut up! remove the turbo from the italian then tell me whats better! or you could always bolt one to the toyobaru!

Pureworx said... »November 27, 2011

because they make cars that dont break down as often

Padre said... »November 28, 2011

THE car of 2012. I'm seriously thinking of buying one now. Only the teenagers who have never driven a car before will hate ( Not enough horsepower !! ) I read a driving impression that says that this car has the best steering feel apart from the Porsche Boxster , and I was sold after that.

BazZtarD said... »November 28, 2011

Those rear light are really the Lexus look of 2000 and can be found nowadays on many ricey rides. I would have also wished they kept the ones from the concept.

Also, the 86 logo on the side looks a bit cheap. This is really the best of what the graphic guys could come up with; two horizontal pistons and '86?? Really?

Brian said... »November 28, 2011

not all high powered car are fun...like Mclaren MP4-12c and Nissan GT-R...fast in straight line and fast in corner...but not fun. Like bimmer 1M thats what we call fun. We drive car so that we can ourself happy.

After all the hype surrounding this car, and THAT is what it looks like?!?!?!?!? They should have stuck w/the first prototype.......

frank said... »November 28, 2011

don't worry folks, this is still a concept, you won't see the actual production car for another 5 or 6 years.

Marcanto said... »November 29, 2011

I've been driving the last 26 years Italian "unreliable" engines (from Alfa Romeo to Fiat)with no trouble at all, trust me it's all in your mind ... For your info the latest FPT technology excels in performance as well as economy and above all enviromental friendly. As said wait and try the latest from he Groupo once they arrive in the Sates until you come to the conclusion of unreliable Italan engine.

thacoolistkyd said... »November 29, 2011

Well, a Celica as expected. I mean, did they just totally just chicken out?  I just hope they have something up their sleeve for the styling of the Scion Version.  I wouldn't hold my breath though.

Pureworx said... »November 29, 2011

again your comparing apples and oranges.... NA vs forced induction... bolt a turbo to this 2.0litre and it will be comparable to a 3.0 v6 etc... as for italians being reliable... its all in your mind, I've had numerous italian and other euro engined company cars non of them can be considered as reliable as a japanese or korean engine.. the jap and korean engines will soldier on for miles if just given basic servicing (oil change, filter, plugs) unlike the expense required to keep euro engines running smooth.

ps. im not american so don't need to wait to see how unreliable alfas and fiats are. if you want great economy with good pulling power try the subaru diesel or a honda diesel both very sweet refined and bullet proof work horses.

E145 said... »November 29, 2011

When, and "if" Alfa comes we'll see. Noone is debating the looks of Italian cars but reliability has never been a strong point.

E145 said... »November 29, 2011

I might not have the top end oh the Gen coupe but take a look at the horsepower  vs weight of this and the turbo 4 Gen coupe.

GT-86
2700 lbs/200 hp =13.5 lbs/hp

Gen Coupe Turbo 4
3350 lbs/270 hp= 12.4 lbs/hp

They're very close. I'd estimate each car to do 0-60 in a few ticks past six seconds. A car doesn't need 400 hp to be fun. I think this car will be a very engaging driving experience but we'll have to wait until we can get behind the wheel.

And for all those wanting a turbo option I'm sure its coming. Wait until the WRX moves over to its new platform and gets its new motor. I'd say there's a good chance that motor will find its way into this car.

Agreed the images with the black car that was nice...its gone from looking great to oh ok so thats it now....what else you got. Shame

You can see the specs and new press release photos that just came out today here:http://www.allcarwiki.com/wiki/Subaru_BRZhttp://www.allcarwiki.com/wiki/Toyota_GT-86
Personally, the car looks awesome, frankly I'm a bit surprised at the low power output I was expecting the Subaru to have an official upper spec with about 200kw. But from what the insiders at Toyota have been saying the car is being designed to be modded. I guess they're setting up the basics and letting the individual owners determine what power the car should be putting out.

The original point of this car is to bring back the GT Trueno 86 (as in 1986 Toyota Corolla), a car that was used in Japan to drift. Suppossedly you can drift one of these right from the factory, without modification. That's a pretty rare thing as most cars would require at least some modifications to drift.

Mariogtivr6 said... »December 23, 2011

It's not just about the AE86. Don't forget the original 1967 GT2000.That's
where it gets some of it's design features, like the driver/passenger
side window design and I'm guessing the front fender bulges. Plus it
changed how the automotive world viewed Japan. It was one that rivaled those of Europe in it's time.
