All-New 2013 Toyota Avalon Sedan Breaks Cover at the New York Auto Show

|

The Toyota Group seems hell bent to change the image of its more unadventurous models as after the world premiere of the new 2013 Lexus ES on Wednesday, the Japanese company unleashed the brand new 2013 Toyota Avalon at the New York International Auto Show.

And like the Lexus model, the 2013 Avalon sports more stimulating and dynamic exterior and interior designs than the vehicle it replaces.

The re-imagined Avalon was penned at Toyota's Calty Design facilities in Southern California and Michigan, while the car's engineering took place at the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Avalon is slightly smaller in all dimensions at 195.3 inches (4,960mm) long, 72.2 inches (1,835mm) wide, and 57.5 inches tall (1,460mm) tall), though it keeps the same 111 inch (2,820mm) wheelbase as the outgoing model.

Key styling elements include the crispier lines on the body, the sloping roofline and a rather large lower front grille that brings to mind creations from Ford and older Peugeots. The Avalon rides on 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, depending on the model, and also features LED combination tail lamps.

The interior was designed from scratch and bears no resemblance whatsoever to the outgoing model. Toyota says that aside from the modern look and higher-grade materials, the new Avalon also offers more space for the front and rear passengers as well as a larger boot capacity at 16.0 cubic feet (+1.6 cubic feet).

Available features include three-color display screens that support the multi-information display, the audio/navigation interface, and the climate control panel, dynamic radar cruise control, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, and a three-zone air conditioning system.

Toyota said that it has made numerous structural and chassis improvements to the new Avalon to improve the ride quality, straight-line stability and handling. The sedan model also offers three distinct drive modes (Normal, Eco and Sport) that change throttle response, A/C power usage and steering settings.

The Japanese automaker did not provide any details on the available powertrains.

The 2013 Avalon will be produced at Toyota's plant Georgetown, Ky. and will roll out in dealerships towards the end of the year.

"

Perhaps because the Koreans are about to kick Toyota ass!?

kachuks said... »April 05, 2012

Mistook it for an Acura for a moment.

Wonderdallas said... »April 05, 2012

The interior is stunning. Far and away the best interior of any Toyota. Material's look on par with Lexus but with a more artful execution. If there were a wagon version of this car I'd consider it.

The exterior looks great too. I'm no Toyota fan but I'm impressed with this car. It's conservative (as an Avalon should be) but not boring.

Of all the Avalon generation models this is definitely better. Don't know about the center dash instrument layout...looks big enough to install an Etch A Sketch.

Another quality car from the Japanese car maker. This will surely offer great features for car aficionados.

This looks good. Looks sporty in a way but still remains conservative. I wasn't too sure about the lower front fascia grille at first. (the front favors  the VW Jetta in a way) I guess everyone is moving towards the gaping wide grille now. The back reminds me of the Mercedes E-class rear (not necessarily a bad thing).

I can say good job Toyota!

All cars of this class look good: Avalon, Maxima, Azera.

Good looking car but it sorta looks like the last generation Impala roofline with a stretched hyundai sonata styling for the sides front and rear, and with a dash from the kia optima....

Peacemaker ic said... »April 05, 2012

like everything apart from the gaping hole out front

Yong Thian Ding said... »April 05, 2012

This ... is the chassis that 2013 Lexus ES used , and it's weirdly almost 80kg lighter than Lexus ES ?!

J said... »April 05, 2012

Hard to believe Toyota could design something so clean, so smooth, so modern yet agressive. That interior is the best I have ever seen in any sort of Asian car, be it lexus, infiniti, you name it.

SgtBeavis said... »April 05, 2012

I like everything but the big mouth bass grill...  Clean that up and the Chevy Impala has a problem...

Sky said... »April 05, 2012

It's so beautiful...

Sweetpotatotots said... »April 05, 2012

the headlight shape is so Honda Civic... Japanese carmakers are recirculating their designs off of other Japanese brands. NoOoOo. still choose Japanese over Korean any day.

Christian Zöllter said... »April 05, 2012

Honda Crosstour looks nearly the same from the side LOL

Tacoman said... »April 05, 2012

I feel the same way...Toyota and Acura must be in bed together.

J. said... »April 05, 2012

If this looks like a Crosstour to you, then you better get your eyes checked.

MadMax said... »April 05, 2012

why does Toyota want to follow Huyndai's design, sad, very sad

Lacoste-logic said... »April 05, 2012

Care to argument that with some examples because I fail to spot the obvious similarities you are talking about between those two manufacturers's design...

BazZtarD said... »April 05, 2012

I understand the styling of the FT86 is the new brand styling for Toyota, but that front grill is really a let down for me... I had expected more

SwingtimeInTheRockies said... »April 05, 2012

It's OK mostly, though those two different front grilles are really at odds.  Toyota should have gone with one theme or the other.

exige said... »April 05, 2012

lol how much more grill could you want its gigantic.....

WildStriker86 said... »April 05, 2012

The exterior is ok, not superb nor disappointing, and the side view makes the car look so long, but that's fine. They could have chosen a nicer colour to unveil it, just saying :)
And finally, the best part, the interior, which is WOW. Really, THAT is superb.

kinda nice.

Polyester Poontang said... »April 05, 2012

All the new cars must be designed in the US deep south. They all look like cat fish.

THE BEST LOOKING FULL SIZE SEDAN!! BETTER WATCH OUT IMPALA! [+]

Sladjan said... »April 05, 2012

Everyone seems to copy A7 sloping roofline nowdays...still generic and copycat design and what's up with that front gaping grille....but it doesn't look bad for what it is.

mmurphy said... »April 05, 2012

Bigger wheels are a must...otherwise okay but not outstanding.

Mitchell Callahan said... »April 05, 2012

are you kidding? Cover up the Toyota emblem and camry grille and this looks like a half-assed Hyundai Sonata Hybrid facelift.

giraffe explosion said... »April 05, 2012

My G*d, is there only one designer designing cars today? Half of the cars on the road now have these taillights connected by a chrome strip. All the roofs look the same too!

Will this new Avalon clean the bottom of my fish tank?

giraffe explosion said... »April 05, 2012

guess you don't see sarcasm

letitdie said... »April 06, 2012

nothanks said... »April 06, 2012

Toyota is hard at work here praising their own car, Stop wasting time and hurry up and do a redign already like honda is for the fugly civic!

Aaadrian93 said... »April 06, 2012

The grille reminds me of a Hyundai Sonata crossed by something Ford...

klowik said... »April 06, 2012

everything looks ok except the gaping big mouth in the front. That kills the car!!

Earl said... »April 06, 2012

I really don't know what to say. I can say that I am not bored...and hope the changes keep coming for the brand.

Faisal Safai said... »April 06, 2012

nice cars

Can't Think of a Better Name said... »April 06, 2012

It looks like the old Avalon's gas pedal got stuck and it collided with the new Azera (to me that is a great thing).

WildStriker86 said... »April 06, 2012

The crap you're talking about? I'm kind of a Hyundai fanboy, but hey that interior IS good. It's classy, refined, and the materials look really of great quality. Makes me wanna sit in there.

Kishu Twong said... »April 06, 2012

I bet Bryan Ferry will get one of these!

Edenqueen said... »April 08, 2012

I agree about that big mouth grill.  That is the only thing I do not like.  Maybe in person I will like it better.

bd said... »April 10, 2012
