Volkswagen Launches New Scirocco GTS with up to 207Hp in Europe

|

Volkswagen has brought back to life the GTS nameplate for the modern day version of the Scirocco.

Unveiled to the public for the first time at the 2012 Leipzig Auto Show in Germany this past spring, the new Scirocco GTS is now available for sale across Europe with prices in its home market ranging from €28,100 (equal to US$36,700) to €33,525 (US$43,800).

The GTS trim level can be combined with a selection of five engines, including the 158hp (160PS) 1.4-liter TSI and 207Hp (210PS) 2.0-liter TSI petrols, and the 138Hp (140PS) 2.0-liter TDI / 2.0 TDI BlueMotion and 168Hp (170PS) 2.0-liter TDI diesels.

What makes the GTS stand out from the other Sciroccos is a cosmetics package that includes stripes running from the bonnet, over the roof and down to the tailgate, red-colored mirrors, and in the case of the 2.0 TSI, brake calipers as well, 18-inch wheels (19-inch optional), a rear spoiler sourced from the 'R' model, and a new rear bumper with a diffuser.

The interior of the GTS is adorned with black seats with red stitching, piano black lacquer accents on the dashboard, the flat-bottom steering (also with red stiches) and the door trims, the GTS logo on the front seatbacks and the edging around the floor mats, and a bespoke gear knob in what VW calls "golf ball" style.

O boy a whole 207hp wow the times we live in.  I remember twenty years ago we where just touching 200hp on some cars, now look at us.  Can't wait for the 2033 Scirocco GTS, can you imagine 214hp.  Mind blowing

Just out of interest are those 2cnts in USD or Euros?

Maybe your too young (or ill informed) to know: a '92 Scirocco GTS cracked an 'outrageous' 90hp from a 1.7 liter. In '92, VW had to use a 6cyl with 2.8 liters to just touch 174hp, and you had to pay the premium of buying VWs flagship model just to get it.

Some cars could touch 200hp in 1992, but I don't remember any OEM 1.4 liters doing so....

I would say mid 30s is not that young pops

Same age, different continents. Explains your baseline assumptions and aptitude. No hating, just saying.

No hating no worries but the article say 207hp out of 2.0 not 1.4   And I know there may or may no have been 2.0L cars out there making 200hp 20yrs ago I get that.  My issue is that these kind of cars have been making the same or around the same hp for at least 10yrs (not saying this car but others like it or in it's class).  It's time they bump the standard up, it's great they can make 207hp out of a 2.0. but all that says in another 10yrs is there going to have the same hp or a bit more out of a lets say 1.0L.  Good for them but I rather have way more hp than a smaller engine in this size of car

I totally agree on the lack of hp progress on these type of cars over the last 10 years!! I completely misread the 1.4 output (my expection is much higher, clearly), the 2.0 output is pretty miserable.

Unfortunately it looks like saftey (weight increases) and emissions/fuel efficiency (obsession with engine downsizing) are giving manufacturers the perfect excuse to mirror a hp trend last not seen since the '70s (like the mighty 165hp Corvette). Even Nissan, the last to make such a mind blowing jump, have betrayed their heritage by now pricing the GT-R into 911 levels.

I'm not hopefully we will see a repeat of the mind blowing hp progress on relatively ordinary cars seen in the 90's. Incidently an example that comes to mind is from '92...the Mitsubishi Evo GSR, pumping from it's 2.0 a massive 244hp.

The good thing about downsizing, is that the industry can only so long play that game until they run out of ccs, then maybe, just maybe, the OEM hp-weight ratio on everyday cars will rise again. :)
