News has surfaced that development of the production-spec Porsche Mission E has commenced following confirmation in December that the advanced electric concept would spawn a road-legal variant.

The car has been codenamed J1 and will act as a direct rival to the world’s most popular electric car, the Tesla Model S.

Underpinning the car will be a custom platform supporting two electric motors and a large lithium ion battery pack offering a range of over 531 km (330 miles). This platform won’t be the same as the architecture being developed by Volkswagen for its production-spec BUDD-e and be created in-house by Porsche

Beyond the vehicle’s monumental range, Autocar says that it’ll sprint from a standstill to 62 mph in a mere 3.5 seconds.

Late last year, it was confirmed that workers at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen plant had agreed to lower wages and a longer working week to secure production of the Mission E.
