Smart ForTwo Cabrio Production Begins In Hambach

Production of the new Smart ForTwo Cabrio has started at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Hambach, as the model is preparing for its arrival at dealerships.

The third member of the new Smart family, following the ForTwo Coupe and ForFour, uses a fabric soft top, which can be opened automatically in 12 seconds, even when driving at top speed, and it can also be operated from outside the car, by remote control.

Just like the newest ForTwo hatch, it was co-developed with the Renault Group, sharing its hardware with the Twingo, but unlike its predecessor, it's now more rigid, as the torsional strength has been improved by around 15 percent.

The new Smart ForTwo Cabrio is already available for order, from December 2015, in three trim levels, Passion, Prime and Proxy, with the cheapest one coming from €15,655 in Germany. For the money, prospective buyers will get to enjoy 15-inch alloy wheels, orange/black or grey/black interior, automatic climate control and audio system with Bluetooth connectivity.

Smart offers the drop-top city car with a choice of two engines, the 999cc with 71PS (70hp) and 91Nm (67lb-ft) of torque, and the 898cc, rated at 90PS (89hp) and 135Nm (100lb-ft) of torque. The new ForTwo Cabrio will arrive in European dealerships starting this month (February, 2016).
