Fernando Alonso’s crash was one of the most severe we’ve seen in a while in Formula 1 for a while, but thanks to the sport’s advanced safety agenda, the Spaniard managed to walk away from his mangled McLaren.
The season opener in Australia was packed full of drama and action, especially when Alonso clipped Gutierrez’s Haas and spiraled out of control, ending up at the protection barrier. Undoubtedly, such a severe crash would’ve ended worse if it wasn’t for F1’s quest for safety.
What exactly goes through a racing driver’s head when he suddenly becomes a helpless passenger wondering what the outcome will be?
“I was flying, so you see the sky then the ground, then the sky, then the ground. You want to stop but it doesn’t stop. It keeps going and going and going. It was quite scary, but at the last moment the car stopped and I had a little space to go out and I said: ‘I will go out quickly because my mother will be watching at home.”
Nevertheless, the double World Champion realized the severity of the crash, as we gathered from the caption of one of his Instagram posts.
“I am aware that today I spent some of the luck remaining in life, I want to thank McLaren the FIA for the safety on this cars. Also my colleagues and fans for the concern and unconditional support. Now it’s time to rest and think about Bahrain, and get back in the car to get the first points of this year!!”
