Mercedes’ answer to the BMW X4, the new GLC Coupe, could take its game to a completely new level, taking aim at the Range Rover Evoque Convertible as well, with an open top version.

A final decision has yet to be made, but it remains a possibility, with the firm’s chief engineer for the GLC, CLS and E-Class, Michael Kelz, telling Autocar, “It would be fun, and it’s actually not that much of an engineering challenge” to build a GLC Convertible.

We can only imagine how such a version of the sporty SUV would look like, with a foldable soft top and the added weight to cope with its open-top view of the sky, but in the meantime, Mercedes-Benz is celebrating the world premiere of the second addition to the GLC family, at the 2016 New York Auto Show.

The GLC Coupe will hit dealerships across the United States over the next few months, in two versions, the GLC 300 and GLC 43 AMG, both using the 4Matic all-wheel drive system, at a yet undisclosed price. In the United Kingdom, the first examples will arrive in September.
