In a world where there is an increasing demand in alternative fuel-powered cars, Opel has proved that diesel can still be a solution.

With downsizing and new technologies at their disposal, the Germans have set a new record after driving an Insignia for 2,111 kilometers (1,312 miles), on one tank of fuel, in a trip from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea and back, with Felix Egolf, a former Airbus pilot, behind the wheel.

This hypermiling tour with the Opel Insignia also shows that anybody who has an anticipatory driving style can easily equal or better the official consumption figures. Anybody can be a hypermiler“, he said.

Egolf drove an Insignia 1.6-liter CDTi ecoFLEX, with 136 PS (134 HP) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque, available between 2,000 and 2,250 rpm, whose official fuel consumption figures vary between 3.8 and 3.9 l/100 km (60.31-61.9 mpg US), depending on specification, but at the end of the 2,111 kilometers, the car’s trip computer indicated an average consumption of 3.46 liters (67.98 mpg US).

The firm’s flagship sedan comes with a suite of technological, safety and comfort features that include radar-based and camera-based assistance systems, adaptive cruise control, Forward Collision Assist and Side blind zone Alert. In Germany, the 1.6-liter diesel-powered Insignia has a starting price of 27,949 ($31,870), tax included.
