Back in 1948, the Jaguar XK120 held the “fastest production car in the world” distinction, and with only 12,055 units ever built, it was a rare sight as well.

Even so, what was once the zenith of the automotive industry can now be acquired for less the price of a Toyota Prius. True, this particular 1954 model is in a deplorable condition, and there are flawless, original variants of the Jag that go beyond the $120k mark; but imagine seeing a Chiron, 68-years from now, missing its original engine and up for grabs for a ridiculously low price.

According to the seller on eBay, the XK120 is “a real blue chip investment, better than stocks or bonds”, but considering it doesn’t come with its original engine and it hasn’t been on the road for over 30 years, the information may be a little far-fetched.

The car clearly needs a thorough restoration, inside and out, which may prove overwhelming to begin with. Furthermore, considering its original 160 HP, 3.4-litre DOHC straight-six is missing, it will never actually be as valuable as a complete one. But don’t let this “minor impediment” stop you, because the XK could prove to be the perfect base for a restomod – just imagine what modern Jaguar engines you could cram under its exquisite lines.

It will definitely go much faster than its stock 124.6 mph (201 km/h) top speed.
