Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) will reportedly use a newly-developed four-cylinder engine on the next-generation Jeep Wrangler.

Code-named Hurricane, the powertrain will have 2.0 liters in displacement and will benefit from direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and turbocharging, producing close to 300 HP.

According to AutoNews, quoting an anonymous source, the powertrain will be built for FCA’s American brands, and will debut in the next generation Jeep Wrangler that’s expected next year. Thanks to the SUV’s aluminum construction and 8-speed automatic transmission, the unit will probably serve as a more fuel-efficient alternative to the current 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar unit, developing 285 HP and 260 pound-feet (353 Nm) of torque.

FCA already has a 2-liter four-banger turbo, used on the Alfa Romeo Giulia, rated at 276 HP. However, its 300 HP will allow it to eclipse even the 120 HP per liter of the Alfa Romeo 4C‘s 1.75-liter engine with 150 HP per liter. It will also develop around 55 HP more than Ford’s latest 2.0-liter EcoBoost, but it won’t top Mercedes-AMG’s 2.0-liter, which is rated at 375 HP in the A 45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG and GLA 45 AMG.
