While it’s the Quadrifoglio version that attracts all the headlines, the lesser versions of the new Giulia are the ones that matter the most for Alfa Romeo.

The new mid-sized sedan will be initially offered with diesel-only powertrains in 147hp and 177hp guises, mated to either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

A petrol-powered Giulia with a turbocharged 200hp 2.0-litre engine will become available later in the year, as well as a 280hp version of the same engine.

With diesel powertrains dominating the sales of the segment, it’s no wonder that Alfa Romeo wanted to throw these versions first into the European market. The company claims a combined fuel economy of 4.2lt/100km (67.2mpg UK) and 109g/km for both the 147hp and 177hp Giulias.

The good news is that journalists were able to drive the new bread-and-butter Giulia on the road, with the videos linked below coming from the Italian Automoto and Quattroruote. Unfortunately, the self-generated subtitle system of YouTube is a mess, but least we get to see a detailed tour of the car inside-out, including details of the cabin.

And if you are one of our Italian-speaking readers, feel free to share what’s exactly been said in the videos linked below.
