While BMW is watching closely from behind the scenes, Mercedes-Benz is getting ready to roll out its first ever pickup truck, believed to wear the GLT moniker.

Based on the same underpinnings as the latest Nissan NP300 Navara, a recipe all too familiar for Renault and its new Alaskan, Stuttgart’s first-ever workhorse continues to hit the streets in test mule form, wearing some of the body panels of its Japanese cousin that are carefully tucked away under vinyl wrapping.

The GLT will be offered as a double cab for consumers in Europe, Latin America, South Africa and Australia, who will get to choose between a range of four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed automatic, which will channel the output to all four corners.

It remains unclear whether the pickup truck will hit the North American market as well, but we’d be surprised if it didn’t, given the share of the market this particular segment commands. The brand will put more light on the subject once the GLT is officially presented in 2017, according to the Daimler road map released earlier this week.
