Mercedes-AMG will get its hands on the upcoming E-Class Coupe but it may not be creating a full-blown AMG derivative.

Autocar reports that the brand has given the go ahead to create a Mercedes-AMG E50 Coupe 4Matic to top out the range. Just like AMG’s various ‘43’ badged models, it would sit above the standard range but below any possible E63 version.

It is said that the E50 Coupe 4Matic will be installed with the brand’s new 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, becoming the first AMG model to do so. Typically, this engine delivers 402 hp but it could be slightly uprated for use in the E50 Coupe.

Daimler itself hasn’t announced whether or not the new E-Class Coupe will receive an E63 variant, just like the previous two-door E-Class didn’t. However, given the hugely positive reception to the new E63 sedan and its storming twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 604 hp in ‘S’ specification, we would be surprised if the brand didn’t use it for another model. If it does, it would serve as the perfect rival to the BMW M6 Coupe.

In terms of its design, the new E-Class Coupe will share many styling traits with the C-Class Coupe and S-Class Coupe, sitting between the two in the range. Just like the sedan, it will be available with the firm’s fully-digital gauge cluster.
