Toyota has launched the production of the all-new 2018 Camry at its Kentucky factory.
The new Toyota Camry is the company’s first model in North America that was designed and manufactured based on the New Global Architecture that was first seen on the Prius and C-HR models.
Toyota claims that the adoption of the TNGA architecture will play a vital role on the improvement of fuel efficiency, handling and comfort.
“The launch of the next-generation Camry is important for Toyota in America, and expands the company’s footprint in and commitment to Kentucky,” said Wil James, president Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky. “We are proud to be the first in North America to produce a vehicle with TNGA. It’s a testament to the skill and dedication of our team members.”
The factory recently hired more than 700 people in order to support the launch of the new Camry, raising the number of employees working there to an all-time high of over 8,000. Toyota’s Kentucky plant has produced more than 11 million cars, including more than 8 million Camrys.
The plant has also received a $1.33 billion investment from Toyota for making it fit to produce TNGA-based models and other improvements that will modernize and streamline the production process.
As for the 2018 Toyota Camry, the new generation will be offered with a 206hp 2.5-litre four-cylinder, a 176hp hybrid powertrain and a range-topping 301hp 3.5-litre V6 engine. The new model also claims to offer class-leading fuel economy in its Hybrid version, returning an EPA-estimated mpg of 51 city/ 53 highway/52 combined.
The first cars are set to arrive in dealers nationwide later this summer, with prices starting from $23,495 for the base 2.5-litre model.
