When most people think about sleeper cars they usually conjure up images of the Ford Taurus SHO or possibly even the Lincoln MKZ with the optional twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine which develops 400 hp (298 kW) and 400 lb-ft (541 Nm) of torque.
We doubt anyone would imagine a 1980’s Toyota Cresta that can run a 10-second quarter mile, yet Mighty Car Mods took on the challenge as part of a tie-in to promote Transformers: The Last Knight.
Of course, the Cresta is far from a performance sedan, so some extensive modifications were in order to turn it into a sleeper which can put most other vehicles to shame when it comes to straight line performance.
Starting under the hood, the team replaced the standard engine with a 4.0-liter inline-six from a Ford XR6 Turbo. As part of the process, the engine was equipped with a larger turbocharger, new valve springs, and a host of other modifications. These changes enable it to produce 600 hp (447 kW), six times more than what the car originally came with.
Since the Cresta was never meant for this kind of power, the team also installed a ladder bar rear suspension, chassis reinforcements and an all-new rear end. Other highlights include a six-point roll cage, a turbo 400 automatic transmission, and a Racepac digital instrument cluster.
All the work has paid off, as the car is able to run the quarter mile in 9.979 seconds at 138.67 mph (223.17 km/h). Paging potential challengers: you have been warned…
