VinFast Taps Pininfarina To Design Vietnam’s First Cars

Vietnamese automaker VinFast has enlisted Pininfarina to create a new sedan and SUV.

According to the Italian styling house, 20 designs were submitted to VinFast for the upcoming models. The company then held a contest which asked consumers to select the designs that fit “Vietnamese tastes” and are “in line with world trends.” More than 62,000 people voted in the contest and the two Pininfarina entries came out on top.

Little is known about the models but the sedan rendering shows the car will feature a stylish front fascia with slender LED headlights that blend into the grille. The car also has a bulging hood and gently curved surfaces which are broken up by strong character lines.

The SUV has a similar front fascia but it is notably taller and more aggressive looking. That’s why the styling similarities end as the model adopts plastic body cladding, prominent wheel arches and roof rails. We can also see a large greenhouse and a gently sloping roof.

VinFast is expected to become Vietnam’s first automotive brand and the company is scheduled to launch its first vehicle in September of 2019. If everything goes according to plan, VinFast will produce 500,000 units by 2025.

In a statement, Vingroup vice president Quang Viet Nguyen said “The direct involvement of Pininfarina, one of the world’s biggest design brand, is expected to bring modern beauty while retaining Vietnamese identity to the first two VinFast car models.”

By 2025, VinFast will be beating all the German and Italian brands both on and off the track 😛

Good for them. Every country should have homegrown products. The West doesn’t need to monopolize every market on earth. I wish them luck. Though the name, VinFast sound more like a money-transfer business than a cool Auto company name.

I actually thought the opposite. I thought VinFast sounded like a ripoff of fast and the furious, Vin being Vin Diesel and Fast being, well The Fast and the Furious.

    • Bash

Yeah, kinda sounds like a drug to me or a pain killer. lol

@SteersUright:disqus – To be fair automakers from Japan and to a lesser extent Korea dominate the Asian market. The corporation started off in the Ukraine as Technocom and has since become one of Vietnam’s largest corporations. It is common for them to have Vin as a prefix for their various sectors (e.g. Vinmec for medicine, Vincom for commerce, Vinhomes for real estate, Vinmart for their mini-marts a.s.o) so Vinfast fits into their model although I find the name a little offputting. I would’ve expected something more like Vinmotors; to be honest it would’ve been cool for them to call it Vinxe or Vinx (xe means car in Vietnamese).

@donaldseymour:disqus – Vin- is a common prefix for the company’s different divisions.

I guess the truth sounds lame. I’ll take my lie thank you.

  • MarketAndChurch

    They look alright.

  • thunder bolt

Notice the grill symbolizes the letter V for Vietnam

    • The_Vannarch

For Vingroup really although yes Vin or Vina is a common prefix indicating Vietnam.

  • Auto

Good, but they need a different name.

  • THE BLUE ONE IS REAL SHARP.

  • Idk why you take it seriously, for a company with zero experience and questionable backing, I doubt they will reach their goals.

  • You mean rebadged Daihatsu? Yes they are cheap and reliable car, but they simply just assembling some Daihatsu with weak export market.

  • Good luck for them, although we probably wouldn’t really hear a lot from them.
