Infiniti Making Progress With Q60 Project Black S Hybrid Coupe

Infiniti’s Q60 Project Black S is in development, the brand’s general manager of Global Communications, Stefan Weinmann, revealed to us at the Geneva Motor Show.

Introduced at last year’s event in Geneva, the Q60 Project Black S was introduced with Formula One technology and sent tongues wagging. However, with the sour taste of the canceled Eau Rouge project still in the mouth’s of many, it was commonly thought as nothing more than wishful thinking.

Intrigued by what the future holds for the Project Black S, we quizzed Weinmann. According to him, development is ongoing.

More specifically, Weinmann said that work is being done on making a fully-functioning prototype. Weinmann stopped short of saying whether or not the vehicle will reach production.

Based on the Q60 Red Sport 400, the original Project Black S concept used the same 400 hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6, to which it added a hybrid system co-developed with the Renault Sport Formula One team for a total combined output of 500 hp.

If Infiniti manages to make the Q60 Project Black S a reality without too many changes, then it might give the likes of the M4 and RS5 something to think about…

And if they do make this, Infiniti should make a 4 door competitor for the likes of the M3, C63, E63 and Guilia QV. You know what would be perfect for the job? The Eau Rouge 🙂

Infiniti needs help naming their cars. I mean I’m just waiting for the twin-turbo blue-s project 99, captain red rain to arrive.

      • LWOAP

        I like red rain.

        • Bo Hanan

          Red Reign?

          • LWOAP

What what are we talking about again?

      • U8INIT

Infiniti already has a Silver S, Blue S, Red S now they will have the Black S. I’m here for it actually

I’ve been in a regular Q60 at the SFO Autoshow. The interior is really cramped, and I’m not even a big guy.

    • SteersUright

Prior Gen suffered the same issue of “too big on the outside, too small on the inside” as well.

  • Honda NSX-R

They better not cancel it like they did with the Q50 Eau Rouge

    • LWOAP

      They probably will.

  • 59soni

Still waiting for a Z35 with that sweet 3.0 liter

    • Honda NSX-R

      Me too

It’s a start at least. Much better than hearing they’ve decided to cancel the project like they did the Eau Rouge.

    • But isn’t that what happened to Eau Rouge? The car was finishing prototype testing when the top brass cancel the car pre production phase… shame.

The styling mods don’t really gel with the rest of the Q60’s styling. Looks… unattractive.

The engine isn’t even the problem with this car. The platform is aging, and they really missed the mark with wacky steer-by-wire systems and other very anti-driver-oriented nonsense that just makes the car a mish-mash of parts instead of a holistic performance sedan/coupe. The taillights and headlights are quite attractive, but the bodyside styling is overdone–though I could overlook all of that if it was a good driver’s car. This is a segment with some very strong competition from BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac, Alfa, and Lexus. I cannot fathom why anyone who considered those would pick the Q50/Q60, even with 500 hp.

    • Honda NSX-R

I drove a Q50S and I was hoping it would be more sporty than it would be, but then again it was in Comfort mode so who knows how much different it feels in Sport mode.

  • I simply didn’t believe if Infiniti would ever released this. They are in the middle of identity crisis anyway. With lackluster range and lack of halo model to bring people to the showroom.

  • Tumbi Mtika

    Nice tease.

I’d probably be in a Giulia QV already by the time they cancel this, anyway.

  • KidRed

Infiniti will never compete with the Germans until they improve their transmissions.

  • kenny the pig

    that’s racist

  • DMax

    Factory rice.

  • Nathan Brinks

I want this and I want it now! Make it Infiniti!

  • Looks like an overwrought aero kit. I’ll believe this when I see a configurator pop up online. I really don’t understand how Inifniti is this embarrassing. It’s 1 step forward and 2 back with them. Saying this as a proud Nissan driver.

  • SteersUright

This isnt bad, but it just doesn’t appeal to me. Infiniti/Nissan seem to favor big, blocky design and heavy tech-laden sports cars over light, agile, and taut (design). This looks too gimmicky, graceless and overdone for me. I’d take a C63 coupe, M4 (or M2 CS), Cayman, and a host of others before this.

  • SteersUright

Q50 Eau Rouge was much more exciting to me than this car.

I have a Q60 and I like this Black S, but I hate the spoiler. It looks like something a high school kid would add to a car. That spoiler is not at all refined.
