While the new Ford Focus hasn’t even been revealed yet, a new report has emerged with juicy details on the next Focus RS version, set to hit the market in 2020.
Ford’s next mega-hatch will showcase the company’s new 48-volt mild hybrid technology as part of a plan to enhance its credibility by getting applied on one of the brand’s most iconic models, Autocar reports.
The new generation Focus RS will most likely retain the turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine of the current model, which will be combined with a pair of electric motors.
The final output is expected to reach an estimated 400hp and 425lb-ft (576Nm) of torque, enabling the next Focus RS to at least match the new wave of hyper-hatches coming from Mercedes-AMG and Audi Sport.
This level of power will allow the hot Ford to drop its 0-60 time from today’s 4.6 seconds down to the low fours. The possibility of a dual-clutch automatic transmission option is also quite strong, especially since the demand for them is especially high in markets like China and the US.
The chassis of the new Ford Focus will be a modified version of the existing one, featuring a 50mm-longer wheelbase and slightly less weight. Just like the current Focus, the new model will be offered only in five-door form.
The existence of the advanced electrified powertrain also means that the price of the next Focus RS will be most likely closer to that of its aforementioned German rivals, once it arrives in the market in 2020.
