Can The 2018 Camaro SS Stand Up To The Smaller, More Expensive, Audi RS3 And BMW M2?

The Chevrolet Camaro has come a long way in recent years, so much so that it’s frequently compared to more expensive cars.

Take this review we’ve come across recently in which the 2018 Camaro 1SS 1LE takes on two of Germany’s best compact performance cars: the BMW M2 Competition and the Audi RS3 Sedan.

You may say that the Camaro is in the wrong company here as it’s not only much cheaper than the German cars but also less sophisticated. Well, the guys from Canada’s Throttle House seem to believe that statement is only partially true.

While the Camaro runs an old-school (comparatively, at least) 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 that makes 455 hp and 455 lb-ft (616 Nm), the Audi and the BMW get almost the same amount of power from much smaller, albeit turbocharged engines.

The RS3 features a 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder unit rated at 400 hp and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm). The M2 Competition has a twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six engine that makes 405 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm).

As far as transmissions go, the Camaro and the M2 feature six-speed manuals that drive the rear wheels. However, the RS3 Sedan stands out not only because it has more doors that the other cars. It also has a different configuration with a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox and quattro all-wheel drive.

As you can see, this is quite an eclectic mix so the comparison review is open to any verdict. Which car is the most fun to drive? And which is the best to live with? Sure, the video will give you the reviewers’ answers. However, yours might differ so it’s best to drive any of these cars before deciding to buy one.

Though choice between M2 and SS, but I’d take the Camaro because NA V8 > Turbo 6 (sounds like shit). Audi lol is just an awd golf.

    • Mr. EP9

Pretty sure that was the Golf R.

  • filetx

I would rather have a car that a toolbox on wheels… but out of the two I’d propably choose the M2 because of rwd, although the RS3 is one of the few nice cars in Audi’s lineup right now

So you like Boujie Boutique cars? So does my GF.

  • performante

The Camaro is the best handling car here. The Camaro RS 1LE was one second slower than the M2 around a course. The SS 1LE punches well above it’s price range. The Camaro’s Alpha chassis is god damn good. It’s too bad people overlook the Camaro and don’t give it the time of day, considering it’s such a performance bargain.

    • SteersUright

People overlook it because it is impossible to see out of. Outside of that, I’d gladly reconsider an SS any day.

  • Hiluin

    Camaro all day.

  • MarketAndChurch

I’m just happy the 1LE is continuing to surprise non-Americans. It’s an amazing car for it’s price. I don’t know why they didn’t compare the Camaro to these two cars based on price. The ZL1 would demolish both, and probably still cost less.

  • TheBelltower

    M2

    • Thomas Jones

Not really into any of em. I’ll stick with my charger scat pack. More horsepower, fun to drive, roomy unlike the Camaro. Actually has trunk space. And if ima race. It will not stay stock.

      • TheBelltower

Makes sense. Frankly, there are many other options that look better than these three on paper.

      • Popeye D. Saylorman

        You can;t drive a stick?

        • Thomas Jones

Of course I can. And I’d have one if they came with it. [: Stick is fun. Just not as fast

  • Six_Tymes

“has come a long way in recent years”
sorry, but that’s a really dumb statement. obviously, you don’t know car history.

  • eb110americana

You can’t fix the Camaro’s outward visibility. And the rear seats and trunk aren’t getting any bigger. But if you can live with those, you can take the $20 grand you saved and lux out the interior until every inch of plastic is covered in leather, Alcantara, and crocodile skin if you are so inclined–and you’ll still have the best handling car here. Road & Track just ran a comparo between the 2019 SS 1LE and M2 Competition–1:26.6 vs. 1:28.9 around the track respectively, and that’s manual Camaro against the much quicker shifting dual-clutch M2.

If you want something with all the rough edges sanded off, something which will draw looks of respect from everyone else, get one of the Germans. If you want the unanesthetized experience of a real sportscar and an NA V8, grab the keys to the Chevy. Here’s hoping they ditch the retro look and lousy packaging next time around, and that you can see out of it.

    • SteersUright

      Very well said. Fully agreed.

    • ksegg

My problem with the Camaro is dead simple.

      It’s TOO BIG.

For me personally, a sports coupe should be small, not the size of a small planet.

      • Popeye D. Saylorman

What are you a chick? Can’t anything bigger than a Go Cart? Damn you never would have survived anything older than 1980.

        • ksegg

lol what’s it to you. I prefer smaller performance cars.

          • Popeye D. Saylorman

            So does my sister.

Tesla!? The Tesla’s overall quality is light years behind that of the Camaro. I’m shocked at what some people are willing to put up with in terms of lousy design and build quality.

I spent a good amount of time in the SS and M2, never the RS3. The M2 is faaaaaaaaar superior in every way. I dont like FWD based, nose-heavy sports cars, so doubt the RS3 will change my mind.
