All-New 2020 VW Golf Mk8 Filmed In South Africa? (Update – New Video)

Volkswagen only recently started dropping teaser images of the 2020 Golf Mk8, despite the car being in an advanced testing phase.

Nonetheless, it appears that it was already spied testing somewhere in South Africa, and with no camouflage on mind you. So, could we be really be looking at the 2020 Volkswagen Golf? Or is the internet trying to play tricks on us with a doctored CGI video?

Let’s see, first of all, this alleged VW Golf Mk8 appears to have fresh front and rear end designs. Only it rides very close to the asphalt, and sits on a set of very large wheels. Of course, it could be either the GTI or the R in an early form, but it could also be a very good tuning job from a private owner. Or a heavily edited video meant to fool viewers. Thus, until we have official confirmation, we’ll take it with a massive grain of salt for now.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen continues testing the Golf Mk8, and they’re probably doing a better job at hiding its design than this video suggests. It will enter production next June, and is said to celebrate its actual premiere in the third quarter of 2019.

Besides the reworked exterior and interior, the 2020 Volkswagen Golf will have a slightly longer wheelbase than the car it replaces. This automatically translates into a more spacious cabin, with the automaker likely focusing on improving rear legroom.

The quality of plastics and other materials is expected to go up, while the ultra-popular compact car could also get semi-autonomous driving features and mild-hybrid powertrains.

*Update – a second video showing the car has been found and shared on social media

H/T to Sherwyn!

  • Puddingpopper

Yay, its softer! But getting longggg there boi

    • performante

      That’s what she said.

      Wait, what?

      • Loquacious Borborygmus

Like pushing a piece of string.

      • Puddingpopper

        bwahahaha

  • Kagan

    To long overhang.

  • Rafał Szychowski

All new? I can see the same geriatric design as in the current generation.

  • Steve Cohn

Yes, that’s the new Golf VIII; this version is probably the GTI model. I say that because of the 18″ wheels and car is slightly lowered compared to a standard Golf. The design matches the pictures we’ve already seen of the mark 8 version.

  • Hamster

Boom… it is the same as current generation… 😀

  • MJ Coffey

Looks like the new GTI. Love the lower roofline.

  • Honda NSX-R

    Looks nice, I dig it

  • performante

Damn, that’s some shit tier CGI

    • Jason Miller

      Looks real to me.

  • mihsf

Isn’t it the 2028 Mk10? I mean, they all look the same.

  • ksegg

Don’t you mean car jacked in South Africa.

  • Knotmyrealname

    Looks CGI to me.

  • mrpentastic
  • interesting..kinda like already

  • Bill Nguyen

    Wheel movement looks fake..

    • Matt

It’s a visual illusion from the unique wheel design.

      • Bill Nguyen

        Ah cool.

    • no25

camera can’t capture the rapid movement of wheels and propellers, so it looks like they don’t move that much or at all when filmed.

    • carlbolt

      Nyquist frequency.
the camera frame speed must be at least two times as fast as the wheel rotational speed in order to not this “fake” thing happen.

      • Bill Nguyen

Ah, that’s probably why. Looks like a high frame rate video. Usually I watch car tv series that are at 24fps I’m guessing, so I probably never noticed that effect until today.

  • Toss

seems to low for a production car

  • SteveHood

Starting to look like previous gen Mazda3

  • Able

What about the silver SUV it was travelling with?

    • Noah Milne

I think it was some sort of Skoda?

      • Matt Campbell

99.9 per cent sure this is a Skoda Scala Scout!

        • TheHake

But what is it doing in South Africa. They don’t get any Skoda’s.

          • Mikuláš Vad

perfect place for testing – no one knows and interests

          • Marty

            Obviously. 😉

          • Mikuláš Vad

            Well…. shit hapens 😀

          • uS’gedlemba

            Hot weather testing.

          • would be awesome to get Skoda though..

          • TheHake

Skoda is GREAT. But you guys couldn’t even hold on to Seat…

          • Puddingpopper

            filming prolly

    • thefougio

      Looks like a facelifted Tiguan.

  • Loquacious Borborygmus

Meet the new Golf. Same as the old Golf.*

    *With apologies to The Who.

  • ƬψƬΩiiXinnex

That is a damn good looking ’20 Golf.

  • Adriano Cardoso

    Gravado com uma genuína tecpix.

  • Very interesting.

  • MPAMPIS

    ι think this is golf 26 ….hahahahah

  • ascariss

looks like the small skoda behind the vw is the new skoda kosmiq testing, seems to be the first video/photo evidence of the prototypes.

  • OdysseyTag

Yea, VW does test a few of its cars here in SA for hot climate testing, RHD suitablity and others. It also produces a few models for export hence the leaks from previous articles.

  • SteersUright

wow! looking GOOD! The front overhang is a bit too massive, but overall, looks so much sleeker. Hope the R finally looks a bit more wild though, to differentiate it more like it always deserved.

  • Six Thousand Times

Could be fake I guess but I don’t know why it would be done in this way. I think it’s real. And it looks pretty good.

  • TheHake

    I’m a bit underwhelmed.

  • Miknik

    Seems legit, seems to fit all the teasers, leaks, and also looks like the rumors of a Mk. 7 reskin (just like the Mk. 6 was a Mk. 5 reskin) are also true, the greenhouse looks identical to the current car;

  • MarketAndChurch

    The c-pillar looks pretty fresh.

  • KareKakk

Tooling for the local Mk1-ish Citi Golf may still be excisting in South Africa? Just put the steering wheel on the right side, the left that is, and go ahead.

    • OdysseyTag

No luck, Citi Golf ceased production here in 2009.

      • KareKakk

I know… but did they demolish all the tooling for making the body parts? Mechanical stuff is not a big problem, I presume

        • OdysseyTag

Well they’ve reappropriated tooling for the current and previous gen Polo’s (latter known as a Polo Vivo) but there’s definitely no shortage of Citi’s running about the place so one could just aswell import one over (assuming it makes it through customs 😉

  • Xavier

The other car in the first video could be the upcoming Skoda Kosmiq (T-Cross/Arona version by Skoda).

  • J-Triumf

I hope not, that thing looks way too long in the front, as well as too long overall.

  • Kaido Alex

This thing’s left-hand drive, cars are right-hand drive here. This is definitely the new Golf prototype.

  • erly5

If this is the new Golf then it’s very disappointing.

  • sidewaysspin

In an age of SUV’s it is already out of date.

  • Kaido Alex

I am very fascinated by the silver SUV. It does seem very Škoda-like. Then again, Škoda is not sold here in South Africa but it’s possible that they could make their way here.
