The driver of a white Chevrolet Silverado traveling down the wrong side of I-74 west of Illinois got involved in a huge accident when he slammed into a semi-truck late last week.

Footage captured by a motorist traveling down the highway shows the Silverado cruising at approximately 60 mph into oncoming traffic. Suddenly, a red semi-truck comes into view, hitting the side of the pickup in an extremely forceful, and scary, collision.

While the two did not crash head-on, the Silverado suffered significant damage and the video captures the immediate aftermath of the crash, revealing that much of the pickup truck was smashed. The incident was so serious, authorities were forced to shut down the eastbound lanes of the highway for approximately two hours.

WQAD8 reports that the semi-truck crossed over into the median of the interstate immediately after the crash and soon burst into flames. Fire crews were able to extinguish the inferno, but only after the entire cab of the truck was destroyed.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The 24-year-old driver of the pickup, identified as Tyler N. Vanalsburg, was later arrested and charged with DUI and driving on the wrong way of the interstate.

What’s particularly shocking about this incident is the fact that things could have been much worse. If the pickup and semi had collided head-on, it’s likely that both drivers would have sustained serious injuries and may have even been killed. This just goes to show that at these speeds, any type of collision can be severe.
