2020 Genesis G80 Comes Out To Play, Makes Sure It Keeps All Its Secrets

A prototype of the 2020 Genesis G80 has been filmed in the midst of testing in Germany, clad in thick camouflage in an attempt to obscure its identity or, at least, most of the details.

Our spy photographers have snapped prototypes of the new G80 in the past, previewing a new design that will make the vehicle radically different to the current model.

Up front, the new G80 will feature intriguing twin horizontal headlights on either side as well as a triangular-shaped front grille. These two new design elements were first previewed by the GV80 SUV Concept back in 2018 and look set to split opinions, but are sure to give the luxury saloon character. The new Genesis G90, unveiled last year, also featured this triangular front grille and many readers were less than impressed by it – but to each, their own…

The rear of the new-age G80 will also be drastically different than the outgoing model and feature taillights somewhat similar in design to the headlights, as well as twin tailpipes.

Speaking about the 2020 G80 earlier this year, Genesis chief executive Manfred Fitzgerald confirmed that it won’t be offered with a V8 engine. This may disappoint some potential customers, as the current model is sold with a 5.0-liter V8 pumping out 420 hp and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm) of torque, but the company is in all likelihood embracing downsizing for this model as well.

We believe the range-topping engine of the new G80 will be a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 pumping out 365 HP and 376 lb-ft (509 Nm) of torque. This powertrain has less grunt than the V8, but it is more fuel-efficient. That being told, we’ll have to wait until the specs come out, as the final figures could be different. Not that almost 370 horses is anything to be sniffed at anyway…

I personally love the look of the g80

    • Bash

Yes, and this G80 will be gorgeous as well.

    • bd0007

The new G80 will look better than the face-lifted G90 as the grille shape isn’t as polarizing (same basic shape, but the dimensions are more pleasing).

  • Maykel

    I wished it’s a fastback.

    • Tumbi Mtika

      It is a fastback.

      • Maykel

        How did you know?

        • Tumbi Mtika

By looking at the design of the car.

  • Mike anonymous

Judging by the face it features design elements directly from the Essentia concept (such as the rear) it is likely the former of the two. I am not sure which vehicle may debut first (the G80 or GV80 (or if they may debut together) but, ) I know that I am very much so looking forwards to seeing both vehicles (as they will be the first new vehicles from Genesis to feature the companies new design language).

(Also I am looking forward to the Hydrogen Fuel Cell variant of the GV80 the company stated was in development. That will be an exiting addition to the luxury segment for sure.).

  • donald seymour

That goes my baby! The G80 is looking good even in that drab moo-moo camo.

  • bd0007

Wish articles on the new G80 would have more up to date info. on the powertrains.

The base engine will be the new 2.5T and the 3.3TT V6 will be replaced by the new 3.5TT V6.

Not clear yet if the NA version of the 3.5L will serve as the intermediate engine option.

    • pissedoffjuicebox

Correct, and I agree. I just laugh when I see Car and Driver and others saying “the powertrain is expected to be a 3.8L V6 and 3.3LTT with the 5.0L V8 being dropped”.

  • yonceous

where send a link or website name

  • J. P.

    Where? Show us the pic!

  • Cool guy

    nice azera

    • bd0007

Nice try, but the G80 has pretty much nothing in common w/ the Azera/Grandeur.

Otoh, the Lexus ES and the Avalon (and every Lexus crossover)…

    • Jo LC

You must have this confused with that gussied-up Volkswagen Passat Audi calls an A6.

  • Tumbi Mtika

    I cannot wait.

  • Galaxium

I’m already a big fan of the G90. The G80 should be a really good development from the Essentia concept.

Unfortunately, already bracing for the “Genesis copied X, Y, and Z!” comments when it comes out.

  • Aura

Please can you tell us where you saw it?

  • nauticalone

Looking forward to the launch of this!

  • SteersUright

    Proportions look rather great.

  • Harry_Wild

It completely covered up with camouflage wrap! Could be any sedan! Totally lame article!
