It’s Official: Fiat Kills The 500 Hatch In North America

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has confirmed the end of production of the current generation 500 and 500e models for North America.

The car maker adds that the current inventory of 2019 500 and 500e will last into 2020, should you want to buy one. Fiat’s North American presence is now limited to the 500L, 500X and 124 Spider.

Sales of the 500 took a nosedive in recent years, with Fiat managing to shift just 5,370 units in 2018 compared to the 43,772 units sold in 2012. 2019 isn’t looking good either, as FCA moved just 1,692 examples through June.

The US-spec Fiat 500 is offered with the company’s 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged four that produces 135 HP and 150 lb-ft (203 Nm) of torque and is paired to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

The more powerful Abarth version also uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter, only here it produces 160 HP and 183 lb-ft (247 Nm) of torque. The battery-electric 500e makes use of a 111 HP electric motor and a 24kWh battery pack, offering an EPA-certified driving range of 84 miles on a full charge.

For 2020, the 500X is getting a new black roof option, while the 124 Spider can be specified with a new “Scorpion Sting” side-stripe and hood decal set. The 2020 500L continues unchanged.

But that’s not the end for the Italian retro city car as Fiat has been working on a new generation 500, which will feature an electric powertrain and bring back the Giardiniera wagon bodystyle as well. Whether the next 500 will make it on this side of the Atlantic, however, remains to be seen.

This car really is not suited for the USA, no matter how cute it is. I recently visited the US and it’s full of big sedans and big SUVs, even in crowded cities such as NY. The concept of “small city car” does not exist in the US. If they spend the money, the car has to be practical, roomy and convey a sense of security..the Fiat 500 has none of this stuff.

    • yep. Its not practical at all. Except for small parking space.

Yeah Americans are gas guzzling dolts. And I am an American so I can say that. Always compensating for small appendages. lol

  • Six_Tymes

that flat slanted rear end, the worst part of its design. bye bye flat head.

    • Matt

Just like the original, a unique and important part of the design.

They never updated the car compared to the euro version

  • CarbonPhiber

At the rate they’re selling, current inventory should last through 3020. LOL.

What will replace the 500 in the Toluca production line? It’d be important to know.

  • Mr. EP9

It’s about time. The damn thing wasn’t selling anyway and I doubt anyone is going to miss it.

  • StrangerGP

Not a surprise, the car wasn’t meant for the US market in the first place and they didn’t even try bringing in the “new generation” to the US.

Just put a Mazda 3 motor in it and call it a day!

Never had poor build quality. Still driving her now and runs great. Proper maintenance helps keep it right,

  • HaltestelleLuitpolthafen

No one is going to miss it. It was unsafe, unreliable, never updated, and sold poorly.

Nothing of value has been lost.

    • atomicbri

Did you own one? Mine is 8 years old and is reliable, never broken down on me, Never had to have “Tony Fix It Again” so not sure what that’s about (The reliability low ratings was because of the 500L).
