What Would You Call The BMW Concept 4’s Grille? Coffins? Waffle Iron? Beaver Teeth? Have Your Say

In this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show we’ve seen a host of new and exciting vehicles, but if there is one car that’s turned more heads and triggered more debate than any other, it would have to be the BMW Concept 4.

Introduced as a preview to the latest-generation M3 and M4, the Concept 4 has a sharp and bold design dominated by what is perhaps the car manufacturer’s craziest grille ever. Virtually everyone we’ve seen comment on it had nothing positive to say.

In the lead-up to the concept’s premiere, a handful of spy shots and renderings provided us with a glimpse of the huge new kidney grille. Some of our readers fittingly dubbed it the ‘coffin grille’, which we found to be hilarious. Since the concept’s debut, more suggestions have been made about the best way to describe the grille. They include the ‘waffle iron’ and perhaps our personal favorite, the ‘beaver teeth’.

Spy shots of the new M3 and M4 indicate that the new cars will adopt the tall new kidney grille but, in all likelihood, feature more traditional slats. While there is a chance the production version will look better, we’re not particularly hopeful.

Now, back to the original question: what nickname do you think fits the Concept 4’s rather unusual grille design? Have your say in the Comments section below – and although this isn’t a contest, it’s going to be very interesting to see what you, our readers, can come up with.

Buckteeth. I hope BMW is just testing the extremes and will rollback the final design.

If BMW goes ahead with that grille then call it a win… for Mercedes, Audi and Lexus among others.

Unlike the rest, as I have stated in previous posts, I love the design. I get tired of the same tiring mundane feces everyday. I want something new.

    • illogicalPotato

Feel the same way. New design is generally uncomfortable for most at first but it grows. However I think in this case it’s a handsome car with a memorable imposing face.

  • Belthronding

all i can say is that ”mercedes likes this”

  • McFly

Beavers are cute. That looks more like a mole rat.

  • I think the grille is fine, maybe just needs to calm down a bit, which I’m sure the production car will get. I made a quick photoshop with a few tweaks on the front. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/02671fc7deb73fd8878fa673df024130bf7dee8239fba4df0a0e763d2f8d5db0.jpg

      Still fugly.

  • john1168

Hideous! Fugly! Bugs Bunny! Seriously, this looks terrible! There’s no way for this to look good.

    • You Thana

You’re rude. Bugs looks overall nice but this looks like Josemite pulls off his fur being alive.

  • Ary Wisesa

I sincerely hope the people at BMW still have their brains in their heads to not let this abomination make into production.

  • I’d call the grille an abomination, a total bastardization of the BMW brand lol

  • WalthamDan

pushing the envelope way too far

  • Zcat

The end of time for pleasing design aesthetics. Too much makeup does not make up for a good look.

I’m getting a Chinese/ French, drunk Irish, acid taking hippie vibe. Throw in a bowl and mix, then glue it to the front.

Handsome. You people have bad taste in cars. None of you morons can’t afford a BMW

    • Ermal Morina

easy there bmw fanboy, that thing is ugly there’s no debate about that

Fanboy? Says the moron who can’t afford a supercar on his icon profile. GTFO before i start roasting you

        • nastinupe

I actually owned a M E46, when it was the latest 3 Series so apparently according to your standards I can comment. This grille looks horrible, and I’m not saying that because it’s big, because a lot of big grilles can look good. I like the RS6/ RS7 grille, I like the Genesis G70 Grille, I like a lot of oversized grilles, however, this one just doesn’t fit the vehicle. It’s almost like they had two visions, the actual car and the grille and the designers were forced to make the big grille work, like that HAD to be part of the design, so they just threw it in there. BMW can do better, they have to do better. This doesn’t cut it.

          • john1168

I was wondering if it was a preview for a future suv grille.

    • R55

“None of you morons can’t afford a BMW”.. what?

    • Mr. EP9

I think your projecting, son. It’s you who have bad taste in cars.

    • john1168

None of you morons CAN’T afford a BMW??? LOL

    Pig Nose!!

  • Luc Helterbrand

everything about the exterior of this car is beautiful…except those snot filled nostrils. Its gross and like mucus smeared on a beautiful face…its revolting.

  • Nick099

Bangle Bucky Grill or Bugsy Bangle Grill .

I mean really…what happened? Did someone over in Munich call Chris Bangle out of retirement to add the finishing touches to the nose??? The car is beautiful…something Bangle could never manage….but that beak! Ughhhh.

    • Matt

Can’t call it a Bangle Grille if he had nothing to do with it…

  • Emoto

    Grotesquely over-styled.

  • Mr. EP9

I call it hideous and grotesque. Whoever approved this should be fired.

    • Matt

So BMW should fire their whole management board?

  • Knarck

It ties in with the rest of the design really well especially the hood and how the top part angles forward! At first glance as a graphic it looks large, but the architectural sculpture of the silver framing itself is so well sculpted and a piece of industrial design art in itself. I think the proportion of this grill helps scale the whole car down and helps advertise the whole sporty/nimble character BMW is known for.
