2020 Hyundai Sonata: Not The Prettiest Midsize Sedan But Pretty Darn Good

Hyundai continues to rival the likes of the Mazda6, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima with the Sonata, which for the eighth generation brings new styling, technologies and engines.

The redesigned exterior makes it look sportier than the car it replaces, although it’s still not the prettiest one in the midsize sedan segment. The low and wide grille dominates the front end, chrome stripes run down the sides, and a continuous lighting signature emphasizes the vehicle’s width at the back.

In terms of build quality, the 2020 Sonata could easily pass as a premium offering, with very good materials used throughout the interior, ambient lighting, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 8-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (optionally available with a 10.25-inch display). The shift-by-wire gear selector might not be to everyone’s liking, but it does look sleeker than before.

You can also use your phone as a key fob for driving away, on condition that it runs Android, as the feature is not available for Apple devices. Furthermore, you will be able to pull a neat trick by ordering your Sonata to drive in and out of parking spaces using the smart key, a feature that works similarly to Tesla’s smart summon. A generous selection of safety systems will make you feel safer behind the wheel.

The engine lineup comprises a 1.6-liter turbo making 180 hp (183 PS / 134 kW) and 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque and a 2.5-liter mill rated at 191 hp (194 PS / 142 kW) and 181 lb-ft (245 Nm) of torque. Both of them are connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and return 31 mpg (7.6 l/100 km / 37.2 mpg UK) and 33 mpg (7.1 l/100 km / 40 mpg UK), respectively.

Production of the latest Sonata will kick off in Alabama next month, before the first cars will arrive in showrooms in December, so getting acquainted with it is kind of tricky at the moment. However, Kelley Blue Book did have a go in it, and their video review is available below.

Every time I see this, that grille looks worse and worse. The push button gear selector is pretty much being panned universally. No one has tested the new 2.5L engine so far; all tests have been on the 1.6L. I’m concerned about the 2.5L because it includes a raft of new tech and would probably avoid the whole thing for a year or two. The Mazda6 always keeps popping up in mid-size discussions, but sales are next to nonexistant, so why mention it anymore?

  • caddy45

I actually see a lot of Model 3 in the front end … but with a grill. Weird looking car.

  • dumblikeyou2

Android-only suits the generic Hyundai customer. Like a discounted Nokia.

    • ctk4949

Im sure crapple will take credit once they get it on their phone. Like they invented it, maaaaaaagic!!

      • dumblikeyou2

and then watch sales of the Hyundai soar. You’re gett’n now, look at you!

    • dumblikeyou2

Oh yay, down voting is showing again!!!!

  • Kagan

What an awful front. Is this the same car they fouled as with some time ago!

Never believe rendered pictures from manufacturers!

        • pissedoffjuicebox

Ah there it is, a variant of your standard “irony” reply.
Well done with your “I know you are but what am I?” rebuttal. I’m sure 5th graders everywhere are impressed.

          • Jawohl

          • Jawohl

Oh the irony with your comment 😉

          • pissedoffjuicebox

Called the irony comment, and there it is above. Jawohl the troll, nice rhyme.

          • Jawohl

            It was just for you👍

      stfu troll 😂😂

  • Finkployd

Looks like the Tonale interior 👀

  • HawkeyeVG

Lol this is their latest production design? The old direction was way better!

  • WalthamDan

HIDEOUS. Looks like its Hyundai’s turn to excessively use the ugly stick.

you have bad taste of cars

      • Thetruthísntalwayspopular

You can’t even write a legible sentence, you illiterate incel.

Says the soyboy that got bodied by me in past multiple times. 😂😂😂

  • salamOOn

in person its so much better looking….. interior is impresive, much better than in new audis….

    • performante

      > much better than in new audis

      lmao “ok”

  • Subi-Rubicon1

It reminds me very much of the 1996-1997 Ford Taurus. Except that this at least has a nice interior.

  • pcurve

there’s a version with better looking grille… this one looks pretty awful!

  • JRP

Call me someone who actually has a good opinion about modern cars but that’s one of the sexiest Hyundais I’ve ever seen. Doesn’t beat the Chinese Lafesta, though.

    • Bige Lee

I never heard of the Lafesta. Yes, that looks similar much better than the Sonata!

    • Matt

Really? The Lafesta looks like a Buick LaCrosse that had one too many facelifts.

    • Thetruthísntalwayspopular

How is this sexy? Are u a downy? Its got a guppy face ffs

Ahhh snowflake, how’s getting your pecker sucked off from your mom and boyfriend going for you?

        • Jawohl

          Tell Us?

          • A 🤴🏻 THAT WILL RULE OVER YOU

            Tell us, jawohl the troll

          • Jawohl

          • A 🤴🏻 THAT WILL RULE OVER YOU

          • Jawohl

          • A 🤴🏻 THAT WILL RULE OVER YOU

            -projecting hurt troll

    • Arct1c

Why would I call you “someone who actually has a good opinion about modern cars” when you just called one of the ugliest cars on the road sexy?

    • pissedoffjuicebox

I think it looks good as well, the other idiots here have opinions just as we do, no facts.

  • Shawn M

It’s begging for the 2.0L turbo..

    • charlotteharry57

It’s coming for ’21 in the N-Line trim level (so much for the “bargain” $33K sticker. That one’ll be close to $40). Together with the hybrids, also for ’21.

    • pissedoffjuicebox

Will most likely be a 2.5L turbo actually. They are phasing out the 2.0L.

  • krusshall

Front doesn’t match the profile which doesn’t match the back. Then I noticed that the US version is different from the Korean version where the Korean version is much more cohesive.

    • Matt

Both versions (US and Korean) are virtually identical, the styling differences come by way of front bumper designs depending on spec – but essentially they are the same car.

      • krusshall

Yes and those fascia changes make a big difference.

  • Craig

I bet this new Sonata will prove to be the BEST looking of the bunch in ‘person’.

  • Thetruthísntalwayspopular

One of the most hideous generic sedans ive ever seen

Says the snowflake that has ugly attitude.

      • Thetruthísntalwayspopular

Still salty about being an incel I see.

Do you even know what an incel is soyboy?

  • pissedoffjuicebox

I prefer the other grille that comes with it, but it is a sharp looking car profile especially, much better than Accord, Camry or Malibu. Not as good as Mazda6. Tech is better than all others in the segment, interior looks nice, just needs the 2.5L Turbo for the N-line and it’ll be a winner. Looking forward to the Optima.

  • Maykel

Meh. I’d wait for the prettier next gen Optima.

  • Alduin

Whats with that ugly long chrome piece in the front extending from the headlights to the hood/fender? Terrible, and the wheels are ugly too. Yes please use android as a second keyfob so someone can hack it and steal your car. Some of these newer cars that make you use your phone instead of a physical turn and crank key is stupid. This and all these dumb safety nannie “features” with new cars make them even more less desirable every new model year starting with 2019 onwards. I won’t buy a new car anymore it’s a waste of money.

  • Danny Boy

My only complaint is the puny 17″ rims. Some 19’s would set this vehicle off!! Can’t believe that they don’t know this……

  • BlackPegasus

It looks like a giant catfish but that interior is class leading and gorgeous 😍
